Did anybody try the double-window mode for taking notes on epubs? I'm really very curious about it.

Just tried with both a PDF and an epub. Seemed to work well. Had opened up each document in portrait view. It then switched to landscape view when I went into the double window note taking mode.

Could take more than one page of notes for each page of the book being viewed. If I closed the book and then opened it again, the notes were still there. I could view just the notes if I wanted. I could also view just the page of the book without the notes being there. A little symbol would appear at the top of each page that had a note tied to it. I could also export the notes as png files.

It all seemed to work quite smoothly. Mind you, I didn't test it extensively. Just enough to see how it functioned. And function it did.

Perhaps also be mindful of distance from screen.

Interesting that they are only releasing a review now. Their webstore was showing that they had more than 20 units in stock over a week ago. And on March 10th, they announced on their Facebook page that they would be shipping orders the following week.

Good E-Reader March 10 at 12:04pm

Wow, this has been selling better than we thought !

Get in on this while you can. We accept all credit cards and we ship next week !

The ONYX BOOX NOTE 10.3 is READY for orders now !

https://www.facebook.com/Goodereader
Clearly they didn't have any stock on hand, not even one for themselves to review. And then they later edited the webpage from their store to say that the ereaders would be shipped from Asia.

See the following thread in this forum to view the experience of others who tried to order the Note through them:

Nice! This is a great feature, I'm really thinking about buying the Note.

Been using the Note a bit more, and in my view its probably the best product at launch that Onyx has released. Everything snaps into place, the device is very reactive, screen is sharp, and its exactly the right size and weight for books, PDF or any other format. The Max 2 remains a great proposition for multi column material and large material, for example scans of newspapers, or magazines. But for books, Note is better. As usual, firmware can be improved, particularly with regards to battery consumption when using Wifi, Play Store and a good shortcut to force screen refresh, its very cumbersome at present to refresh when in A2 mode. But these are all easily fixable via updates, clearly not a showstopper. Its a great device, possibly the best in market, for portable but powerful eink reading.

The “Good e reader” review shows a coloured back. What kind of material is that? Is that even the Note? It looks a similar colour to the n96’s back, which was aluminium.

Edit: I found the answer, it is indeed a metal back.

Some questions for you lucky folks, if you don't mind me asking

1. How's battery life? (with/without A2, with/without wifi)

2. Has anyone tried using a cloud app like Drive or Dropbox? If one were to put pdfs/epubs etc in Drive/Dropbox, would they be accessible only through the app or would they auto-download to the device and become accessible from the rest of the device?

3. Would you consider it for serious note taking or is pen & paper still better? That is for lecture notes, diary writing, idea sketching, taking notes while reading a physical book, etc.

4. How's the pressure sensitivity?

5. How is the rendering? Is it largely smooth, or are there a lot of black flashes?

6. If you take epub notes (split view) and then change the font size - what happens?

7. If you make pdf annotations and later change the zoom, do the annotations render correctly?

I realize these are a lot of questions and that you don't have any particular incentive to answer them, so no pressure. But it would be great to get some thoughts, in particular in regards to questions 1-3

It's hard to find a reason to have buisiness with goodereader after their 13" reader campaign.

Not used extensively enough to comment on battery life, but its very good (days of use) if Wifi is mostly off. With Wifi on, definetely better than Max 2 with the firmware it had when I tested it back in January, but will probably improve with better firmware. The whole device seems more responsive than Max 2, including as others have said, much less reflectiveness of the screen. At least early batches of Max 2 were almost glossy.

Rendering is very smooth, very few black flashes, but there is an issue with third party apps in that I don’t see a straightforward way to force a manual refresh of the screen - has anyone come across it, or where in settings can the shortcut be set?

Drive apps - I use OneDrive, no issues there. I use SwiftKey as soft keyboard whilst marking annotations, works like a charm in predictive swipe mode. I have downloaded to device and gone offline so far to turn Wifi off and save battery, will test other scenarios.

Will test epub et all. I haven’t yet used the stylus (included one HAS clip, by the way), due to concerns over permanent scratches on the screen, as witnessed by Max 2 owners. Will start using it once concerns have been allayed.
