I love the new Oasis and the battery live is great, as is the lighting. I look for the positives and not the negatives. There are way too many that only want to find the negatives in people and their toys.

Lol, this is true. I first joined MR because I needed help with ePub conversion. Only became active again because I was researching library management related stuff. Also for Kindle offline collections hacking or failing that, new e-ink reader recommendations.

I basically find the Oasis 2 battery life is almost totally dependent on lighting setting and whether wi-fi, 3G and/or Bluetooth are enabled. Turn them all off and battery life is excellent unless the unit hangs up indexing a book. Every one of the "features" eats battery power if enabled.
As for screen lighting during the day the screen background tint looks just like the one on the G8 Kindle Basic with the lighting off or the color of most paperback books and newspaper's paper color. With appreciable lighting on it looks more like a expensive coated paper art book, very white. |

Since experiencing our 3rd Nor'easter in 11 days and losing power for days on each one. Mostly likely today also. I have been charging batteries quite a bit lately. For those of us unfortunately to have a less than good battery life on the Oasis 2. I have been using an Anker PowerCore Charger to charge the Oasis 2 more than any of my other devices. Those include Amazon Kindle Fire Hdx 8.9, I pads mini and Air 2, my Kindle Voyage. My i phone comes in a close second but it's not new or big.
I also recommend to anyone to be wary of second hand Oasis 2's . Either on ebay or Amazon. No ones putting in new batteries in these things so there is the possibility of getting One that someone returned for poor battery life. I'll sell mine to Amazon only. When they have something better or not. They sold it to me so they can buy it back. I do like everything else about the oasis 2, they did make a very nice device, they just under powered it. I know many say it's ok and they have no problems. I do believe those that do. I 'm just saying not everyone have the same experience and those will be returned or not. I'm keeping mine but charging it more than any other device I own. I will trade it in at some point before the battery craps out all together. Last edited by Wearever; 03-13-2018 at 05:50 PM. |

I have a Voyage but am considering getting an Oasis. My only concern is battery life. On my Voyage, I'm having to recharge the battery at least every other day - then again, I do read several hours a day with a rather large font which requires frequent page turning. I'm afraid that the battery on my Voyage may not have a long life expectancy due to being charged so often, and afraid of running into the same problem with one of the new Oasis models. It hasn't escaped my notice that many people are unhappy with the battery life on the Oasis to begin with, and if I'm going to end up with a device that has a battery life expectancy of only one to two years, it seems I'd be paying too much for too little.
Am I wandering down a garden path, or is it a reasonable concern that I have about the life expectancy of a frequently charged battery? |

But as for off color, I don't find the Carta screen to be off color in bright light. I sometimes use my LED light I have attached to the headboard. When using that pointed at the screen, there's no way I'd need/want to use the front light. But when that light would be bothering my wife, I do use my front light. |

Do you keep wifi on or off? What light brightness do you usually use. You might need fewer page turns per hour because of the larger screen, but depending on your answers to the above questions and random chance, you might end up disappointed with the new Oasis. |

I bought a paperwhite for i was tired of obsessing over the oasis battery. I noticed the oasis screen tilting as you move it ( do not know what the wording is to say what I am trying to say) gets stuck. Everything on my screen was upside down and would not align itself right side up. Drove me crazy. Lasted for about an hour then it fixed itself

Clawdia, I was very unhappy with the battery life when I first bought my Oasis. I was using the auto back light mode. I went to the extreme of testing the battery life under the conditions Amazon specifies battery life (a very early post in this topic). Amazingly they met the spec. The key was changing the light from Auto to 10. There is a direct correlation between light setting and battery life. WiFi on also had an impact, but less than light.
Since I lowered my light settings I have been ok with battery life, especially since the larger screen was the big lure for me. So bottom line is they technically meet the spec, but I think the advertised battery life is misleading if you expect to take advantage of all of the features. I wish they had opted for a larger battery & met the spirit of their claims. I never tested my old Paperwhite or Oasis I, but that was because I never had a bad experience leading me to question battery life. Hopefully Amazon is listening and will make major improvements to the Oasis III ! Cheers, Joe |
