Noel Coward, ‘the master’, is one of the most remarkable figures in the history of twentieth century entertainment. Prodigiously talented, he blazed a trail through theatre, film and song on both sides of the Atlantic. In the theatre he wrote hit plays like The Vortex, Private Lives, Hay Fever, Cavalcade and Blithe Spirit. On film he wrote the war classic In Which We Serve and the timeless love story Brief Encounter. His songs, which number into the hundreds, include ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen’, ‘I’ll See You Again’, ‘A Room with a View’, ‘The Stately Homes of England’ and ‘Mrs Worthington’.

His greatest creation may even have been himself – what Time called ‘a sense of personal style, a combination of cheek and chic, pose and poise’. This led to his increasing celebrity on American television in the 1950s and in a series of wildly successful one-man shows in Las Vegas, not to mention his popularity as a character actor in the last decade of his life.

He married his first wife, Margaret Gudejko, in 1965, and they had three children together. He married his second wife, Ruth Leon, in 1995.

Sheridan Morley authored a number of books including Gladys Cooper (1979); The Hollywood Raj (1983), The Other Side of the Moon: The Life of David Niven (1985), Odd Man Out: James Mason (1989) and Robert: My Father (1993). These are now all republished by Dean Street Press.

I am beginning to feel remiss for not posting this before now.

Pen & Sword Books, a publisher in the U.K., has 50 books on sale for only 99p each. For most of these books, that represents 90% or more off of the retail price. Yes, you read that right--90%+!

What little that I know about the publisher, I would think that they produce books (and other publications) of a moderately high quality. It appears that most, if not all, of them are non-fiction works, dealing mainly with British military history of the past century, but especially with that concerning World War II. That description may need some fine tuning; if you need to correct something that I said, or add substantial information to it, by all means please do so, with a post to the thread.

For those of us across the Pond, all appearances are that Pen & Sword does sell ebooks to us. FYI--based upon the current exchange rate, 99p is just short of $1.40.

I think that all of Pen & Sword's ebooks may be only in the ePub format.

Anyway, below is the sale's splash(?) page. As I mentioned at the beginning of this post I have been sitting on information about this sale for a little while, but I think that the sale is still good for at least another week. If my memory serves me well (I couldn't find this information after doing a cursory look on Pen & Sword's website a while ago), the sale was scheduled to last one month.

Thanks for this, I have had some of their books but was confused by some being Pen & Sword, some Pen and Sword and some Frontline Books.

I poked about and all seem to be both ePub and Kindle - you just choose which to put in your basket - and indeed at least some are in the Kindle store but not necessarily at the same price.

Saw that among Pen & Sword's 50 sale ebooks. Was tempted to get it. I read so little nowadays; I mainly listen to audio. So I decided against buying it. I think that I might look at it again, though, after seeing your post.

I recently have gotten interested in the great age of European exploration by ship. I've listened to audiobooks on Magellan (the first to circumnavigate the earth) and Vasco da Gama (who made the first voyage from Europe by sea to India and other sources of spices that were precious and expensive). Once they had been out to sea for a little while, replenishing the food and water supply always was a major issue. Maybe not so much for Nelson; I don't remember him venturing very far from the home islands. But, he was a warrior, not an explorer.

Perhaps worth noting that pretty much all the reviews of this at Amazon UK say that the maps are unreadable, and the book should be avoided.

Have you never heard of the Battle of the Nile, in which Nelson destroyed Napoleon's fleet at Alexandria? It's what Nelson was most famous for, prior to Trafalgar! Alexandria is a fair way from Britain, particularly in a sailing ship.

Not to mention he also served in the Baltic and chased Admiral Villeneuve into the Caribbean prior to the Battle of Trafalgar.
