The "master" of all format versions is the *.lyx (LyX document processor - all others are either exports or *.tex -> pandoc conversions)

Notes:

• KOA2 devices have started to ship with firmwares more recent than the two versions listed at the top of the directions. We can not jail break those (yet).
• People still need to PM me for the password to the files.
  But please read the complete directions first.
  
• The problem I had with my unregistered KOA2 was not the fault of the Kindle.
  There was a strange problem with my PC.

Our current jail break will not work.
(Amazon fixed the jail break protection before they publicly posted that version.)

Oh, sorry for bothering. Does that mean only the 5.9.2.0.1 firmware on the device when it shipped can be cracked at this moment?

Yes.

But those devices where built for the Oasis-2 introduction last year.
It is unlikely that any of those remain un-sold (and not updated since then).

It was reported, sometime last month, that new devices where shipping with 5.9.2, so it is not unreasonable that some are now shipping with (a different build of) 5.9.2.0.1 or 5.9.4

I have a KOA2 that I would like to jailbreak. USB networking with ssh and ;log runme would meet most of my needs. (But the other tools would certainly be handy.)

When you get it JB, we can try out the new KUAL booklet (works for me on PW3-5.9.2 but ... ).
I will have to make up a special package for it because coplate is not ready to release a final, tested, version.
He will do that when he feels it is ready, but we can play with it in public while he is working on a final version.

I'll admit that I have forgotten how to get the jar int the package and re-sign everything. I spent too much time working on other stuff between the last time I put it back into the .bin.


I think I am comfortable that it won't cause any problems. It may be more memory intensive, because it recreates things on "Constructor" call instead of the "create" callback. But I don't think that is a major problem long term.

If you want to package that jar into a kual_booklet_install.bin feel free to spread it around widely now.

I could do that.
I have problems with my own work that has me puzzled.
So doing something I am certain I can do might be the un-blockage I need.

I did peer into the jar file, I think the way you handled the problem is very general, it will probably work on a lot of device, on a lot of firmware versions.

I see no mention of it in the KOA2 jb guide.

There is no mention in so many words in the posted directions.
Read the PM I sent you. That tells you what will happen to the jail break when you install a different (consumer) firmware image.
(I can change the PM boiler plate a lot quicker than I can change the instruction master.)

Consumers (end users) need to run a consumer firmware.
At least if they have any hope that anything they get from this site (or Amazon) will work as intended.

(Firmware) Developers sometimes do not run a consumer firmware, the device will not melt down, while they learn about the system.

The next update to the instructions does include the update to consumer firmware step (with links to Amazon server for the images).

The currently posted version of the instructions does have a series error in it -
But your well past that point now.

I really think that the Oasis units build in the first production run for the device introduction last year are all sold (and probably updated) by now.
So updating the directions is a lower priority now than months ago when everything was new.

I will try to get the updated directions pushed to the repo (and otherwise published) later today.
After testing the KUAL-fix and re-testing the USBnetworking package.
The delay is so I can include that information also.

KOA2 jb followup:

5.9.2 installed, usbnetwork installed, working fine after multiple spontaneous reboots after freezing during search on ;un in both directions. I had to toggle usbnet off a number of times because I forgot to install authorized_keys, to change config to use sshd instead of dropbear, and to give the Oasis a different IP address so my laptop would quit grousing about host keys every time I switched between the Oasis and Voyage.

I'm willing to test KUAL on Oasis, but not in a hurry because of reboot fatigue and other pressing obligations.

I noticed that while I still had my KOA2, I think I made apost about it somewhere -but it is basically just what you think, the line that turns USB port from usb drive to network hangs for some reason I never figured out.

What I did to work around it was just to set usbnet to WIFI only. It is very slow, but it would work reliably.
