Candy Jar Books are in one of their generous moods again and have made another of the Lethbridge-Stewart novels free for a short period. Available until Saturday.

For anyone unaware, this is one of a series of licensed spin-off novels that feature characters originally created for the Doctor Who television series back in the 1960s.

Moon Blink - Sadie Miller
amazon.co.uk | amazon.com | amazon.com.au | amazon.ca

Quote:
July 1969, and mankind is on the Moon. Both the United States and Soviet Russia have lunar bases, and both are in trouble.

Back on Earth, Anne Travers has learned she is about to be visited by an old friend from America, Doctor Patricia Richards. Lance Corporal Bill Bishop is aware of the visit, and is on hand to meet Richards.

She brings with her a surprise, one which the Americans and Russians wish to get their hands on. But the only man who can truly help Anne, Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, is away in Scotland.

It’s a game of cat and mouse, as Anne and Bishop seek to protect the life of an innocent baby – one that holds the secrets to life on the Moon.

A series of novels from the classic era of Doctor Who, starring Anne Travers and Colonel Lethbridge-Stewart, based on the characters and concepts created by Mervyn Haisman and Henry Lincoln.

Crimson Worlds
Quote:
Spoiler:
Erik Cain joined the Marines to get off death row. The deal was simple; enlist to fight in space and he would be pardoned for all his crimes.

In the 23rd Century, assault troops go to war wearing AI-assisted, nuclear-powered armor, but it is still warriors and blood that win battles. From one brutal campaign to the next, Erik and his comrades fight an increasingly desperate war over the resource rich colony worlds that have become vital to the economies of Earth's exhausted and despotic Superpowers.

As Erik rises through the ranks he becomes a deadly warrior, and he finally finds a home, first with the Marines who fight at his side and later among the colonists - men and women who have dared to leave everything behind to build a new society on the frontier, one where the freedoms and rights lost long ago on Earth are preserved.

But causes can be fleeting, imperfect things. Amidst the blood and death and sacrifice, Erik begins to wonder. Is he fighting the right war? And who is the real enemy?
I have read several of the books and have the whole series. If you enjoyed The Sten Chronicles and/or the Starfist series then give this one try.

Robert Heinlein's Friday is on sale for $2.99 at Amazon.

Friday is a secret courier and ardent lover. Employed by a man she only knows of as “Boss”, she is given the most awkward and dangerous cases, which take her from New Zealand to Canada, and through the new States of America’s disunion, all the way out into the stars and the new colony of Botany Bay.
Thrust into one calamity after another, she uses her enhanced wits and very many skills to evade, seduce or even kill her way out of any sticky situation she finds herself in. For she is both superior and inferior to the average human.

As an AP—artificial person—the best humanity has to offer has been written into Friday’s DNA. Yet she is often treated like a second class citizen—if she were ever able to claim citizenship. Her mother was the test tube and her father the knife, as the saying goes, so she has less rights than the biologically-born human, and no soul, according to the church.

But in Friday Heinlein has created one of the most enlightened, warm, engaging and humane characters in the science fiction field, gifting us a novel of female empowerment that was well ahead of its time.

From all I've heard this is one of Heinlein's worst books - think rape fantasy not female empowerment...

I would emphatically disagree. That's like saying Starship Troopers is a fascist fantasy. I don't know that I would necessarily get "female empowerment" from it either, but definitely not a rape fantasy.

Agreed. "Starship Troopers" isn't fascist fantasy. It's certainly jingoistic, and jingoism and facism share some highly visible traits, but jingoism is not facism. Paul Veerhoven's film adaptation on the other hand very much is a fascist fantasy. Except it isn't. It's a satire of fascism and Nazism.

As for "Friday" being rape fantasy. No. Hardly. As with "Starship Troopers" being a fascist fantasy I think this is another case of finding something if you look hard enough for it.

Friday is actually my favorite Heinlein novel. The original Whelan cover certainly helped it get into my adolescent heart.

Michael J. Sullivan's Runner's Dawn is available for free at Amazon. I think it is self-published. I got a notice from ereaderiq on Monday that the price had dropped from $4.99 to $2.99, so I'm glad I didn't get around to buying it then.

Just a warning. One of the reviewers says that the author of Runner's Dawn, is not the Michael J. Sullivan who is the author of the Riyria series, and the writing is not very good. Sorry about that.

Greg Bear's Psychlone is $2.99 at Amazon. A review describes it as "a weird mash up of creepy horror, X-Files, and rural B-movie sci-fi." What's not to love?

Curiosity may kill Larry Fowler. A scientist from New Mexico, Fowler is hot on the trail of a mysterious phenomenon that is known to freeze animals instantly and can demolish an entire town. Part ghost story, part science fiction, part political treatise, Greg Bear's novel tracks Fowler on his journey to discover the true nature of the PSYCHLONE.
