Does anybody know if mail.ru is safe?

I made a new acquaintance online and he lives in Russia, and his email is mail.ru. I Googled around and see it's huge in Russia, but since I've never heard of it, I figured I'd ask to see if you guys had any experience with it. Thanks.

I think it's okay. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mail.Ru If you're worried, just don't click on links in the emails |

FWIW, the vast majority of spam I get these days is from bogus outlook.com addresses. Just treating mail.ru like any other mail provider should be fine.

There's never any danger is sending mail to an address; it's only mail that's received that's an issue. As has been said, don't open any attachments or click any links, and you'll be fine.

Thanks Harry. Then I guess next up is if I trust my new friend if he sends attachments. (And that has to do with the Russia aspect, rather than my friend. If he were any place else, save N. Korea or China, I wouldn't think twice about any of this.)

I wouldn't worry about opening an attachment from a friend. I wouldn't open an attachment from an unknown (of course I wouldn't do that on Yahoo, GMail, AOL or any other mail service either).

Beware of Word macroviruses, as the state of Russian computer security is pretty dire, and viruses of every kind are widespread.

If the friend does say, in the email text, that they are sending an attachment then I wouldn't touch the attachment.

Yeah, really, Red. I get that all the time, from people I even know pretty well. Like I'm supposed to just open an unknown attachment. Thanks for the reminder.
