The $1.99 sales are hard to pass up if they are books I read and enjoyed long ago like the Grey Mouser one I just saw today. Even if they would end up so far down my TBR list they might never be read. I'm really making an effort to get through all my already purchased books.

If I see a book I remember reading and enjoying from long ago, on offer for £0.99, I'll often buy it, but not add it to my TBR.

Edit: Case in point, today's Amazon UK daily deal on book 1 of the Belgariad.

The one group of books I always buy every month is the Baen monthly bundle. I've been buying this every month since it started in 1999 (I think it was then), and it's introduced me to some wonderful authors who I'd probably never have otherwise come across.

Other than that, these days I generally confine my purchases to "Kindle Daily Deals" which appeal to me, with the very occasional book that I notice which particularly appeals. Eg, I pre-ordered the new Penguin Classics edition of Hesiod's "Works and Days" (which I received this morning), because of my specific interest in the book.

In terms of reading, I often alternate between reading from my TBR list, and re-reading old favourites, or catching up with my Baen back-list.

When it comes to entering e-books to Calibre you just drag and drop the ebooks which creates a place to backup the books in case something happens to your device/account (I've been using ebooks a long time and it was my compulsive backing up that meant the books I purchased in .lit format are still available to me.

When you drag and drop an ebook into Calibre all of the metadata is read. That is usually quite good in the case of purchased books or Gutenburg books. In the case of documents in ebook format that have been created by fan fiction or other such sites it may take a bit of checking. I use the original file name plugin to check that.

However, if what you are doing at the moment suits you then kindly ignore this message.

Somehow I have still only bought 2 books this year, and one of those was meant to be a library loan, but I didn't feel I had the time to wait for it to become available.

There are a couple of books on my wishlist right now that I could buy at the drop of a hat, but I make it to the end of each day without buying them and I don't particularly feel I'm missing out.

It's nice.

I'm still actually behind on my TBR, since I count freebies and loans, but I'm fairly happy with where I stand right now.

If I see a thriller 99p eBook advertised that sounds good I often buy it. Found new authors that way
Sometimes its not so good as reviews though.
I have at least 350 free books still to read though

Welcome to the thread, Jo69.

Perhaps this idea will help: Compare the prospective purchase with the rest of your books to be read. Do you want to read it more than at least half of the books you already have? If not, don't buy.

I don't think anyone's got an issue with books bought for immediate consumption; at least I don't. By definition, they don't add to one's TBR. It's the books bought for inventory, especially the ones of the "cheap price, kinda sorta maybe appealing, wasn't on my wishlist but why not?" books that are to be eschewed!

I use Calibre Portable and keep it on an external HD. It's easier to back up that way because I can just copy it to my backup HD, and I never have to worry about what machine I'm using.

For me, I made a Reading Status column that is a dropdown, and have just a few options: Unread, Read Once, Reread, Uninterested. Then I put what I've actually done with the books. It helps to have just a few options for sorting, and those cover almost everything that can be done with books.

For physical books, I use Libib.com to keep a list for household inventory uses, and if I want to read one of them I just pick it off the shelf. There's no need to really keep track of them like there is for ebooks, since I can see all my pbooks quickly.

My rule is that I can only get those if they are free. That way at least I'm not spending money on them.

Those are super tempting! I eventually just had to refuse to look at the Kindle section of Amazon and only check links to deals that are free. I'm spending a lot less money on books now even if I'm still adding quite a few.
