Having issue with custom columns
![]() I have downloaded the latest calibre file and installed it fresh. I have opened the user manual and gone thru adding the custom column and sub-column step-by-step and so forth. Long story short (too late!) - I can't get it to work. I can create the custom column. And I can create a single sub-column under that. But that 2nd level will not allow any further refinement. Any attempt to create the 3rd layer results in a new 2nd layer sub-column that is is named x.y (where x is the first name and y is the sub-name). I've tried searching in the forum and such but I cannot find an answer. Forgive me if this is a duplicate. I've included a doc that has the screenshots for each step in the attachments |

Did you declare those columns to be Hierarchical?

Yuppers I did. You can see that step in the 2nd screenshot on the doc I attached. I also tried creating the column lookup with the hashmark in the name, without the hashmark in the name (since it seemed to populate automatically). I've tried setting the column type to each selection at a time and then declaring the column Hierarchical but no dice. I've even removed any/all custom columns, restarted the program and tried to enter the example shown in the manual *exactly* - step-by-step - still didn't work

I know this sounds a bit "silly" but, do you have the tags sort by name? In other way, the hierarchy doesn't appear.

Terisa - doesn't sound silly. I've been known to look for my glasses when they have been atop my head :P
Anyway, I gave it a shot but it didn't seem to make much different. I get a sub-group under the main Tag but can't get any further sub-grouping. If I add, for example - Admin.Dictionary to the custom column Genre, I get: Genre Admin.Dictionary instead of: Genre Admin Dictionary Which is the hierarchy I'm trying to get to |

Hold On! It Worked!
Terisa - I had created a new column but forgot to set the tag hierarchical. I just double-checked and once I did that and the sort was on name - Bang! there it is! See it wasn't silly at all!!!! Thanks to you both - Terisa and The Ducks |

Congrats on figuring this out and getting to the root of your problem.
![]() Next time attach the screenshot images themselves and not a docx that requires another program outside of mobileread and you will get more folks responding to you. |
