Yes, you can use larger SD cards. Memory Upgrade Mod Guide has instructions on how do to this.

My kobo is also stuck in a loop and hard reset won't do anything. Could someone please send me the image for it? It's a kobo glo. Thanks!

What is a "hard reset"? There is the reset done by pressing the pinhole button and a factory reset. If you don't mean the latter, you should do this before opening the device.

Sorry, yeah, I meant the reset with the pinhole button. I cannot do the factory reset since it's stuck in the restoring loop. Thanks a lot for the message!

You can do a manual factory reset by:

- Charge the device for at least an hour.
- Hold the power switch in the off position for 20 seconds
- Hold the light button down while turning the device on.
- When the screen changes, release the light button.

That should do it.

I copied the img to the sd card using:
dd if=glo.img of=/dev/rdiskx bs=1m
Alas, the kobo glo hd remains braindead.
A one second push on the on/off button lights the red led,
a six second push swithes the led off and that is all the response
I get. I am afraid there is a much more serious problem
preventing the kobo glo hd to boot.

It isn't working because I sent you the link for a Glo, not a Glo HD. The thread is for requests for the Glo, not the Glo HD. While you specified the model number, I never look at them and don't remember them. So, I assumed you were asking for the image for the device in the thread title.
