Finished "10lb. Penalty", by Dick Francis. This, like many of his later books, has only a fairly peripheral connection to horse racing, which appears in some way or other in all Francis' books. Description from Fantastic Fiction:

Quote:
Teenager Benedict Juliard has no other ambition than to ride in steeplechases as an amateur jockey. Having agreed not to do anything that could destroy his father's growing public service and political career, Ben finds himself targeted in an attack mounted by his father's enemies.
Absolutely excellent - one of his very best books, I think. Very highly recommended!

Unique world. Interesting people. Good ending. I was disapointed, though, that steerswomen can kill others and turn on/off their commitments. Overall, this was a nice one. Solid B [4 stars].

Next, a library book, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull.

Fun so far...
Neil Gaiman's contribution was excellent. Still reading... and also reading Analog SFF for Jan/Feb 2018.

Finished Mythos: A Retelling of the Myths of Ancient Greece by Stephen Fry. Enjoyable stuff, amusingly retold to add that Fry flavour. My only slight disappointment was that he did not mention the stories of Antigone or Ariadne (two of my daughters are named after them).

It did help me answer a quiz question on Pointless yesterday, however, regarding Prometheus, so I forgive him .

I'm halfway through an interesting science reportage and analysis The Tunguska Fireball by Surendra Verma. The Tunguska event was a large explosion that occurred near the stony Tunguska River in Yeniseysk Governorate (now Krasnoyarsk Krai), Russia, on the morning of 30 June 1908. Quite interesting read.

I finished The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld last night. Was a pretty slow mystery...though had interesting characters. Next up Skin Game by Jim Butcher and wondering if there's ever gonna be another Dresden Files book.

Currently reading Where I Was From by Joan Didion - a wonderful running comparison of the actual versus the myth

I would have rated this book higher if I didn't hate the characters so much. Interesting ideas but the little information provided left me rather empty. Probably, better enjoyed with the tweener crowd. Rated C [3 stars].

After reading four library books, I need to read a few books I purchased! So, I'll start with an impulse buy from 2017, The Accidental Hero by Matt Myklusch.

That's about what I thought about this book. I really like the idea, it's just the characters I hated.

One book with a similar premise that I will try at some point is The Menagerie by Tui T. Sutherland and Kari Sutherland.

I'd say that the author did a good job if the characters inspired hatred in you. You obviously engaged with them in order to produce such a strong emotion. The worst thing is a book where you just don't engage with the characters at all; if you engage to the extent that you either love or hate a character, then that's good writing.

And I've finished Cackle of Cthulhu. It was enjoyable. Some of them were excellent. And I don't usually like the Lovecraftian stuff. I think I liked this because it didn't take itself too seriously.

Still reading Analog SF for Jan/Feb 2018.

Except I'm pretty sure the characters in question are not supposed to be hated in this book.
