Peter May's Entry Island is free at Kobo Australia, New Zealand, and U.K..

(It doesn't seem to be free at other retailers as far as I can tell, but I don't usually buy audiobooks so I might be missing something.)

Right so found about 5 pages of freebies on the Australian Kobo site by loading the Mystery - Thriller category sort by price this included free audiobooks by John Sandford, Harlan Coben, Dan Brown, William Boyd, Val McDermid, Michael Connelly, Steig Larson

Looks like Kobo books are only playable in the Kobo app? Are they DRMed?
If there is no way to play them on other apps, how is the Kobo app? Reliable? We still can't get any use out of Hoopla audiobooks because of the stupid app.

Unless they've changed things since the initial launch, they are downloadable through the app; you can then transfer them from the app to PC. They are mp3 files though they don't have ".mp3"; you have to add that to open the files. So there's a bit of annoyance involved. But for freebies--some of which were already on my radar--I don't mind a bit of annoyance.

Kobo is Overdrive-based. The only way to get the audiobooks is through the app, but the app downloads "nameless" files that are actually DRM-free mp3 files and can be renamed for backups and use elsewhere.

So being Overdrive-based doesn't automatically mean it works with the Overdrive desktop app, then? I didn't realize that.
