HDMI slot on the upcoming Note

If it doesn't have an HDMI slot, does that mean you can't use it as a monitor?

If I understood correctly earlier demos had such a feature but they scrapped it in the actual product (perhaps to avoid competing with their own Max 2)

If it does not have an HDMI socket, you probably cannot simply just hook it up to an HDMI source.
Of course, it remains intended by default that you can use all other techniques.

Some of the other techniques depend on root access, though, right? Notably usb networking? So for those options, there's also still a caveat whether/when there will be root access provided.

Not all the ways you can adopt, not necessarily.
Even rooting was not something that we should have done.

Simply, the device should have allowed tethering. But that setting is empty, unavailable. I create USB networking with other devices, and I would never dream to root them.

See also the USB On-The-Go problem (very relevant to the lack of Micro-SD). With root, you may fix it.

Onyx should fix all lacks, or permit users to patch it. This root protection was a mistake, since they do not have the full ability to provide all the services. But the situation is still fluid.
