Hello, I have a G090KB kindle PW3W it has been OTA updated to 5.9.2.0.1. My reading of the wiki and this forum implies that this version cannot be software jail broken yet. Is there a way to downgrade it to a suitable software version?
Also, If there's anything to try to help out getting a software jail break working then let me know. I just wish Amazon had better collection management... |

Hi,
I've got a PW3 Firmware 5.8.10.1, I see this firmware has no official downgrade/Jailbreak method - but I came across a thread with some people having success, so I gave it a go. I managed to get the update file to stick around (5.7.4), and kicked off the downgrade process. Unfortunately it seems I've managed to brick the device - when it starts up the startup tree graphic goes all corrupt, and it eventually gets to a 'Kindle needs repairing screen' I can't get the USB mount to stick around long enough to copy the firmware update over again - is there anything I can do or am I best to just return the device and say it was a dud on arrival? ;P Edit: Tried DO_FACTORY_RESTORE file, now gets stuck on the language select screen and freezes. USB device shows up in Windows, but the storage is inaccessible. So close, yet so far away. I'll return it tomorrow, and post info BEFORE trying to downgrade next time. Yeah, you know, there might be a reason you can't find directions here for jail breaking that device/firmware version combination.

At least you tried things out while it was still new. Maybe the delivery person sat on it. |

Okay, I'm back with a new Kindle!
Same deal: * Kindle PW3 (Serial number: G090 G1...) * Firmware 5.8.10.1 (3214560001) * Purchased in New Zealand, so will be a Euro unit. * No Special offers * Unit is not deleting update files upon USB Disconnect * I have skipped setup, and Unit has never been connected to WIFI Sorry if I'm beating a dead horse, but am I right in saying that this firmware is a 'special case' like 5.8.9.0.1 - where a downgrade can be successful, and the unit can be jailbroken if done right? (I.E Not trying to downgrade to 5.7, which cases boot loops and bricks the device, like in my previous case.) I'm reading conflicting information, and obviously don't want to brick a second unit for no reason. Wont try anything until advised this time! Cheers, Last edited by Tokudoku; 01-21-2018 at 07:00 PM. |

So that is still the case even if the update file is not deleted upon USB disconnect? Would a downgrade to 5.8.9.0.1 result in the same bootloop I experienced with 5.7.4?
Bit confused as I thought the only reason 5.8.8+ could not be downgraded, and then jailbroken was because of the update file being deleted? Last edited by Tokudoku; 01-21-2018 at 07:14 PM. |

No, because the firmware excludes the package type used for the factory, production testing, firmware images. There are other reasons the update handler will delete the update package also. Look at the first four characters (they are plain text) of the image file if curious about its "package type". (or use KindleTool's "info" command on them) This thread you are posting in DOES NOT depend on a downward change in version number running. It does depend on being able to install a FACTORY USE ONLY image rather than a public customer image. That is: The public customer firmware images do not supply the ;installHtml command. The private, factory use only, firmware does provide that command. |

Reading a few pages back I noticed you refer to 5.7.4 not being safe to downgrade to, as there's been recent reports of bootloops - if I can get a factory use image of 5.8.9.0.1 to stick on my kindle after disconnecting USB, is there a chance I can get a successful flash? Is this just in the territory of 'untested so can't advise you to do it'? I can see people offering successful results with the PW3, on my firmware just a few pages back, which is adding to my confusion here. For now, I'll do as advised and wait it out. I'll create the update blocker folder before connecting to WIFI, and ensure I stay on my current firmware until there is a supported jailbreak, or at least more information. At this point I'm just curious why there seems to be so much contradicting information ![]() Quote:

If you dig into the information in this thread you will find that my most recent comment was:
"No apparent pattern to why there are so many different experiences" or words to that effect. If it works for you, that is all we will know, that it worked for you. |

On the previous device I bricked I chose UK English on device startup - Since successful results I've read about seem to be choosing US English, I'd be inclined to try again using US English and 5.8.9.0.1. But I don't think I'll be able to return a second bricked unit, so due to the current risk and murky situation I'll have to leave mine as is for now. ![]() If everyone who bought a kindle was willing to sacrifice their first one (Knowing they could return it for a replacement) We might be able to figure out what the pattern of success was ![]() Quote:
Thanks the both of you for all the advise and explanations - if I can give you any more information that'll help, let me know! Last edited by Tokudoku; 01-21-2018 at 09:42 PM. |
