One thing that I've noticed is the times that I do get emails alerting me about a new book, it's usually an Amazon Digial Services book. I've never had it notify me before the book is actually available.

Amazon just alerted me to a book by an author I'm not following, but not to the authors I am following. Something wonky in their system.

I don't think so, unless it is an advertisement. Doesn't look like they use affiliate links when linking books to amazon from their search.
