No I am using our private home internet connection. As is pretty common around here fibre comes into the house, 1 Gigabit/sec max., unlimited volume. Here optical fibre to and into the house, the internal optical network terminal, the physical connection for VOIP and integration of internal copper POTs telephone cabling, plus the router for WiFi/Ethernet are all generally provided at no cost to the home owner. LAN is 1 Gigabit/sec Ethernet throughout the house plus 802.11n WiFi because that capability is what we are given. If I am not at home I use 4G cellular data. If I am outside of cellular coverage for any extended period (which happens when we are away sailing) I use HF radio for email. If I am working in a client's premises I only use their internet for purposes related to their own business operations. So I have no need to rely on or abuse anyone else's internet connection. Sorry, you did ask so I tried to cover all bases for you .

Ok now I must ask: HF? The only thing I can think of is a high frequency radio and am having a hard time figuring out how one would check email with it.

I suspect the same is true of paper books. Most people read novels. I just did a bit of googling about fiction vs non-fiction and I couldn't get any real numbers but just about every site I found stated that fiction sells vastly more than non-fiction. I realize that's not reliable information but I'd be really surprised if it's not true.

Yes you have that correct, that is HF radio.

There are several options. There are some commercial services that provide paid email access into the internet over HF radio (e.g. Sailmail) for both business and private emails. For licensed amateur radio operators there is the free service provided by the Winlink organization for private emails only (private emails can be with a business though, for example to purchase over the internet).

It works like the old days analogue modems connected to ones telephone line when the message came as tones down the telephone lines and were turned into text by the modem and ones connected PC. But the tones are sent by radio and that connected to a PC with the appropriate software modem and editing application turns it into text. Of course it works the opposite way round for sending emails . It can be very slow though but fine for text only emails.

A number of satellite services are also available but are either also slow and somewhat expensive, or faster and expensive. It is more reliable though as it doesn't suffer from the vagaries of propagation and noise (static) as anyone who has used HF radio (aka shortwave) to listen to "shortwave radio" broadcasts (BBC, VOA, etc.) knows. The hardware varies from the normal satellite phone up through much more expensive systems with dish antennas which lock onto the satellite and maintain their direction as the boat rock and rolls about or changes direction - so just like a home satellite internet connection but with a dish that locks onto and keeps pointing at the satellite as the boat moves around (options include TV too).

Ok shortwave radio. I was thinking more a radio phone that you had to go through an operator. Like some people used in the 70's.

I don't know about private use of corporate provided tablets, I suspect it is considerable but offset to some extent in that most receiving a corporate owned tablet will also be provided with a smartphone. In which case an employer's provision of a smartphone and bandwidth to an employee is one of the very few things an employer can provide free of tax (tax free to the employee and deductible to the employer) so I suspect private use on corporate cellphones may predominate.

Being in IT, I get to deal with tablets (iOS, Android, Windows) For the iOS and Android devices, Facebook, Youtube, Weibo, Twitter, other social media apps and a TV watching app or two are among the high usage programs. Admittedly, Facebook can be a high usage program even if you never actually use it. As long as an installed app is not on our "bad apps" list (bit torrent clients, Xunlei, Kugoo Soribada and other peer-2-peer apps are examples), we really don't care. For some reason, the Windows tablets don't seem to get as much personal use though we've been shocked a few times when working on them. Don't the lusers ever think about cleaning the bloody hard drive before sending their device in for repair?

Revenue Canada doesn't seem to care about supplying a tablet for employee use as long as the majority of the use is for business. Nor is a corporate phone considered a benefit these days. I returned the Kindle basic. I should have never bought it. I was going to use it as a cheap thing to leave at work. I totally forgot I can move books to the nook now and the screen on the Kindle Basic is way to dark. Back to BestBuy I went.

I wouldn't ask someone if they read trashy novels. Unless I know them super well then it would be what kind of trashy novel do you like and then only so I might could recommend a book.

I too sensed that a little when I used to use an ereader or read a paper book in public . Of course, ereaders (and tablets too) cannot deliver the very comforting to some image that having a big paper book in hand delivers in public - the silent from others "Oooooh look, he is a real keen reader, must be clever because look at that big book".

Of course, overlaid over these "comfort" things is hopefully the enjoyment of the book itself; however I do know people who carry books to impress but not read, perhaps some pretend to use ereaders for the same reason?

I'm not sure what kind of projection is going on with this post.

At least where I am e-readers (even Kindles) aren't so common that I am likely to benefit from some sort of supposed reflected glory by using one. Most people are too busy looking at their own phones/tablets/e-readers to worry about my device and if anything, it would look like I am using a mini-tablet.

I like my Kindle Basic, but I admit that it doesn't really add anything I don't already have with my other Kindles (especially the Touches). Well, I guess it does have Bluetooth, but I don't use that. As for being "too dark," I just use a Fintie case and an M-Edge E-Luminator and it's fine for reading. I've read about 10 or 15 novels on it so far.

I assume that you are a male (just going by your avatar) in which case have you tried something such as a bright pink cover for your device; a fluffy one, perhaps? Maybe one with an erotic image on it - perhaps with a caption so that people will be craning their necks to get to read it?
