Yeah, they had a good editor in charge of their horror line.. I've bought ebook versions of most of my Leisure stuff. What I don't have I'll generally snap up when it goes on sale.

That it's pretty good but not as good as The Pines. I haven't read the other books in the Pines series. I felt the story finished neatly in the first book and didn't want to spoil it.

Have you watched the TV series? I have it coming soon from Netflix.

From what I've heard season one was the only season intended. They adapt all three books and it ends. The show was a success and Fox renewed it for a second season, but nobody was sure what to do with it and the show limped along for an additional eight episodes.

The first season is supposed to be very good though and has a satisfying ending.

No. I recently got Netflix but the television is not my domain. Stupid thing is kept on game shows all the time at my house.

FYI, one can watch Netflix on their phone, tablet, or computer, and Netflix currently offers three streaming plans:
1 viewer at a time (SD),
2 simultaneous viewers (HD),
4 simultaneous viewers (HD and UHD).

According to Help>Netflix Streaming Plan:

Wayward Pines isn't available streaming. Aside from the streaming, I still get DVDs from Netflix. I like too many old, unavailable movies to be streaming only.

Currently, both seasons of Wayward Pines are available streaming on Hulu.

Thanks for that. I don't have Hulu. I have Netflix and Amazon Prime. If I ever commit to cutting off cable, I'd likely sign up for Hulu as well.

The short story They Came With the Snow by Christopher Coleman is free, free, free. I wouldn't normally recommend something by an unknown author, but I paid good money for this story at one point and now you guys can read it for free.

When a mysterious blast goes off in a small college town, triggering a blizzard, the few survivors must decide whether to stay or leave and face the monsters who came with the snow.

Scott Nicholson's first novel, The Red Church is on sale for $0.99 at Amazon.

I read this when it was originally published as a paperback original back in... 2002? Memories are hazy. But I liked it and picked up his next few books.

The listing shows it as being first in a series. I guess he's written further novels about the Sherriff. But the book is a standalone. Here's the (to me) overly long synopsis:

For 13-year-old Ronnie Day, life is full of problems: Mom and Dad have separated, his brother Tim is a constant pest, Melanie Ward either loves him or hates him, and Jesus Christ won't stay in his heart. Plus he has to walk past the red church every day, where the Bell Monster hides with its wings and claws and livers for eyes. But the biggest problem is that Archer McFall is the new preacher at the church, and Mom wants Ronnie to attend midnight services with her.

Sheriff Frank Littlefield hates the red church for a different reason. His little brother died in a freak accident at the church twenty years ago, and now Frank is starting to see his brother's ghost. And the ghost keeps demanding, "Free me." People are dying in Whispering Pines, and the murders coincide with McFall's return.

The Days, the Littlefields, and the McFalls are descendants of the original families that settled the rural Appalachian community. Those old families share a secret of betrayal and guilt, and McFall wants his congregation to prove its faith. Because he believes he is the Second Son of God, and that the cleansing of sin must be done in blood.

"Sacrifice is the currency of God," McFall preaches, and unless Frank and Ronnie stop him, everybody pays.
