I think it's true for nearly everyone that e-ink ereaders are better for reading than tablets. For those people who can comfortably read on tablets that's less true but, I think, true just the same. I think people who prefer a tablet for reading pick it over an e-ink reader because it's good enough at reading and very good for other things they care about. The exceptions, of course, are people who need a larger screen to give them a reasonable amount of text with a very large font. We have a couple of those people in my retirement home.

Goofy is right. Shoes and cars are not even in the same category. Ereader and tablet do exactly the same thing when it comes to reading. It depends on what you read. Everything you can read on an ereader can be read on an iPad, the reverse is not true.
I agree that goofy is right! Goofy was my intent. I suspect that quite a few people who own cars also own shoes. In fact I think in most states driving barefoot is illegal.

I'm sorry you took my goofy comparison seriously. There's an old saying about learning from your mistakes.

Where did you hear that? You can drive naked if you want. Now if someone finds that offensive, you can get an indecent exposure charge.

You may not be able to walk into a McDonald's in bare feet, but you can drive there without shoes. Driving a car barefoot is legal in all 50 states.

You'd never make it to your car barefoot in AZ. And most months you can't drive without oven mitts either.

No they don't. A tablet can't provide the same reading experience as you get from a dedicated eInk eReader. Some people don't care but, for someone who sometimes reads hours at a time (like I do) there's a HECK of a lot of difference between the two. And, if you read outside, good luck with the glare and fading you get on a tablet.

Parts of Texas are the same way in the summer. Cloth seats are also a must.

Funny how this thread got off topic a tad

I just got a case for my Oasis 7 inch off of ebay. Paid 6$ for it and I love it. I posted a link in the kindle forum if anyone is interested. It is a fake brown leather and it covers the device completely more so than the amazon branded case. It is so beautiful I am floored. I feel like I am carrying around an expensive case and you can not tell its fake leather

Go back to where this misunderstanding started. I suggested that an ereader is not needed unless there is something wrong with the reading experience on the tablet. Now there is a ton of reasons (some valid, some mere preference which make them valid to the individual) to switch to an ereader. Getting distracted is not one of them, IMHO.

The benefits of an eink ereader come with cons as well. There is for example: Slow fragile display, only black and white, horrible implementation of browsing or pdf support.

If I want to browse the internet, I use my laptop or tablet. If I want to read pdf files, the order is laptop, tablet, ereader. If I want to watch a video, the order is tablet, laptop. For reading fiction, manuals or reference texts, the ereader is at the head of the list -- lighter, easier to read in bright light, etc. Black and white? Very few of the books I read any colour other than the cover image.

Slow, fragile display? Slow? Changes pages faster than I can read them. Fragile? I've lost count of how many tablets and phones I've seen with cracked or shattered displays. Not to mention laptops -- things like the user picking up the laptop and starting to walk away having forgotten to unplug the power supply. Unless you have a MagSafe connector, a not so great oops! moment. The joys of being in IT -- I dropped my new iPhone 5S in the urinal and I need you to fix it (answer to that one was talk to the purchasing agent, IT does not do phone repair). The cracked displays I've seen on ereaders have been mostly caused by user error. The user dropping his ereader on the seat of his car, forgetting it was there and sitting on it-- final score butt, 1 Voyage 0, carting the ereader in a purse or backpack without a case, having it stuffed into the pocket of a pair of cargo shorts and bumping into a banister. Treated properly, the chances are good the display will outlast the battery.

Sheesh... I'm having a Wolf moment and may break into a riff on never read with a naked ereader.

That is assuming static pages. Yes fast enough for that for sure. If you need to scroll or zoom in a page it isn't so pleasant no more.

Except it is a valid reason for some folks. Otherwise it wouldn't be mentioned as a reason to use an eReader instead of a tablet. All people are different. If the trick of not using a tablet (with all its distracting goo-gaws) works for you, then it works for you. Period. It really doesn't matter if you *should* be able to ignore those distractions, some people can't. (For me, reading with a tablet is really not much of a temptation.)

Slow? ... how fast does it need to be to turn pages?
Fragile? ... that's what a good case is for.
Black and white? ... for me that's a plus when reading novels or non-fiction.
PDF support? ... not really an issue for me since I don't read PDF documents on eReaders (or on tablets ... and rarely on desktops or laptops).

In other words, mostly PDFs. I'll readily admit that tablets are better for PDFs. But I need to read PDFs on a portable device about ... never (or extremely close to never).

I have a couple of old e-ink readers that I never use anymore, except for loading all my books to them as a backup archive. Nook ST and Kindle.

I read on my phones. And I accumulate phones like some of you collect ereaders. ( No cell service on the ones I most often use for reading. ) I love the most recent version of the Kindle app.

Tablets are are for watching video and the rare PDF.

I stay out of Illinois in January/February, unless forced to go by circumstances. I would rather be in Texas in the summer than Illinois in the winter.
My mother's family is from the Northwestern Illinois area. My wife grew up in Texas.
