Charlie, Starbucks Via. The dark roasts are surprisingly OK in a pinch, which is what I'd call this, and there has to be a Starbucks somewhere. Surely you can boil water at your aunt's?

During a recent power outage I made some Via with room temperature bottled water and not only was it far better than nothing, it was better than the cup I got at Dunkin' Donuts later that morning. Faugh! I don't get Dunkin' Donuts, the home of truly terrible coffee.

Back on topic, it was typically for me Starbucks French Roast, black, no sugar, this AM.

A serious situation indeed for you both. I have no solution for a stranger here, except maybe a bigger pantry! I tend to have a couple of spare bags of beans stored as they have quite a good shelf life.

Charlie, we drink plunger coffee, and many years ago we bought in England two mugs with their own plungers. So as long as you have ground coffee with you, it’s as easy as making instant coffee and much nicer, IMO.

I have one of those, too. I used to take it to work, but the whole business was time consuming and messy. Work coffee is vile and not to be considered, but I found that keeping some Via packets in my bag made all the difference.

On this: I was at a thrift store today. They had a Bodum French Press. Nothing unusual there except for the fact the glass was missing. I mean all the glass. No way to hold water.

We don't have Via here - I'm guessing they are coffee bags? We had expected to be able to buy coffee bags in England and were nonplussed to find they weren't there (this was some years ago, so they may well have them now). Quick thinking by the lady in the coffee shop resulted in a sale of two mugs plus a bag of ground coffee. We still use the mugs if we go away somewhere for a few days with our Field Naturalists group and are staying where there isn't likely to be a coffee making facility.

I only spilt the very first mug of coffee, when I pushed down the plunger without also hanging on to the mug. Oops!

Meantime, a cup of black coffee has just been demolished after lunch.
