Of course. But then if you can afford an iPad, you can afford an e-reader.

And, at least for me an e-reader has saved me money. The mass market paperbacks I picked up ran between $6.99-9.99. But my ebooks tend to range anywhere from $0.99-3.99.

How do you know the iPad wasn't a gift or saved up for?
So you are giving me $140 for a new Kindle since you seem so flush.
Now that is where we differ, ebooks I buy usually run $1.99 to $2.99 or free. Paper books typically $1 or less. But unless it is a special cookbook, I don't buy new books.

That might be true, but it is equally true that I enjoy reading more on my $50 refurbed Paperwhite than I do on my $200 Lenovo tablet. I love my tablet, it's a real workhorse since I can use it for writing, but for reading, the PW is better for me.

That ignores the fact that ereaders are better for reading than tablets. My e-ink ereader weighs a fraction of my lightest tablet's weight. It has a screen that's far better for reading regardless of lighting conditions. It needs charging far less often.

If you have a car, why waste money on shoes?

Goofy is right. Shoes and cars are not even in the same category. Ereader and tablet do exactly the same thing when it comes to reading. It depends on what you read. Everything you can read on an ereader can be read on an iPad, the reverse is not true.
