Good idea... about the bottle. I was not whining, you were. I just wanted to state that anything can have a utility. You only have to find it. In this case I had to think many layers down.

I didn't vote because there was no "It depends" choice. I would not buy a book with ads that is $1 cheaper, probably would buy one that is $5 less, and would be very likely to buy one for $10 less. This is assuming that I wanted that particular book (as opposed to browing and saying "this looks interesting...". For that I go to the free sites such as MR.)

i think we can count on advertisers seeing to it that publishers making the ads as intrusive as possible. also most likely they will crash some ebook readers over and over.

and no, i'd rather pay for my books and get them ad-free unless it was brief ads in no more than 3 locations and were for books or reasonably related technology.

I voted against ads because while I don't mind House Ads at the back of a book or ebook, I would really hate third-party ads in my ebooks. Those cigarette ads in the middle of a paperback were bad enough.

When it comes to ads - E-Ink's low refresh rate is a benefit.

I voted yes, mainly because I don't trust the publishers to do it unobtrusively. However, if the ebook was done in the style of the wowio free books (cover image embedded with my name and crediting the advertiser, and a screen of advertisements at the beginning and end of the book would be all right by me. Ads interspersed with the content of the book would be bad. Of course, if the ads were excerpts for other books, at the end of the ebook, that would be tolerable also. In the 70s some of my SF paperbacks had a glossy ad for cigarettes in the center of the book (or maybe for the SF book club), I hated that too.

Not in books, but I could handle them in journals, magazines etc. Hopefully they would subsidize the cost of things and make it all cheaper.

I'm not sure where I stand on this,and I wonder of differing implementation for different formats.For example,with the readers that do not have internet access-you'd pretty much be stuck with these ads in your books,well forever -but on a kindle,would the ads vary ?

I'm not against advertising,but I also don't want to see it everywhere I turn.If it were relatively unobtrusive,I might consider it-but I would pay a premium to not have it as well,or at least would love the option. (and I would hate if they took the same approach as those DVDs where you can't go past the ads..grrrr)
