I think there are arguments both ways, but I don't think it's genre fiction in the sense that sci-fi or mysteries are. In any case, I hope it's clear that what's meant is "everything else." GA Russell was right; it was a terribly awkward thread title.

Silk Purse by Jerrard Tickell

Jacky Collins was not born to greatness…
Born instead to a mother whose interests lie elsewhere and saddled with a stepfather who doesn’t want him, his life stretches out before him, bleak and miserable.
By the age of twelve, he becomes the ringleader of a boys’ gang and starts a life of crime, one that seems likely to inevitably land him in the nick.

The course of Jacky’s life changes dramatically when he goes to London on a whim.
Eager to bilk as many rich Londoners of their money as possible, he doesn’t think about the future until it comes time to bed down for the night, desperately alone, cold, and frightened.
The last thing P.C. Patrick Doyle expects to find on his rounds is an unhappy little boy, so thin that his ribs stick out.
Upon hearing Jacky’s sad story, P.C. Doyle takes the boy home to his wife.

And so begins a new future for young Jacky Collins, leaving behind the ugliness and squalor of Hartlepool for the comfort and love of Uncle Pat and Aunt Bridget’s home in Theobald’s Road.
This new life is full of surprises for Jacky, from Aunt Bridget’s insistence that he regularly wash his face to having his tonsils out to attending a posh school.
But what changes his life most of all is meeting Miss Cathleen Joyce, the granddaughter of Lord Slieve Aran, with whom he falls instantly in love — at the grand age of twelve — before being promptly sent back home.
Yet as clever Jacky works his way through school, to Oxford, and into the world of advertising, gradually becoming the bright and distinguished John Sinclair Collins and beginning to make his mark on the world, he never forgets Cathleen Joyce…

First published in 1937 by William Heinemann.

Jerrard Tickell's books, a number of which have been made into successful movies, include Moon Squadron, Island Rescue/Appointment with Venus and Hussar Honeymoon

Issybird is correct. This thread and its title reflect the merged efforts of another MobileRead member's and mine. I disagree with renaming it non-genre fiction and prefer the current title, which is more accurate; why not leave it as is?

I made an editorial call on that one, Froide; it always seemed awkward to me and its original purpose was served long ago. As it falls out now, we've got stickies for the most popular the genre threads and two omnibus threads, fiction and nonfiction, for everything else and the new title reflects that better. I'll also note that the generic Fiction thread is by far the least posted to and viewed; I think it might serve more of a purpose with its new title as more inclusive of all fiction that doesn't fit into the specific genre threads. People won't have to hunt for a dormant thread for something neither in a genre sticky nor doesn't quite fall under the old rubric.

One thing that's bugged me quite a bit is the various single title (genre) posts in the non-stickied sections e.g., all the Xtian titles or Westerns. Where they're repeating bargains/freebies, that's OK - like the Venture Press discounts although I feel they would be better served in a single thread of their own.

In some ways, I'd prefer to have more genre or publisher threads rather than clutter up the forum with one-off posts.

I've thought that myself from time to time. I would think it would make browsing the deals much easier.

Wasn't sure which thread to post this one in. But Christopher Moore's Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal is $1.99 at Amazon.

The birth of Jesus has been well chronicled, as have his glorious teachings, acts, and divine sacrifice after his thirtieth birthday. But no one knows about the early life of the Son of God, the missing years -- except Biff, the Messiah's best bud, who has been resurrected to tell the story in the divinely hilarious yet heartfelt work "reminiscent of Vonnegut and Douglas Adams" (Philadelphia Inquirer).

I just appreciate people sharing.

I've missed offers in the stickied threads and the non-stickied ones. So I can't say either is better.

The title's been tweaked again, to make it clear that all other fiction can find a home here.

There are non-stuck genre threads where people are welcome to post and if one doesn't exist for a genre (I'm not sure we have a Western thread, although we may), it can be created (try to check first, please). That said, people are welcome to post either singletons or in the dedicated threads as they wish.

However this is resolved, I hope we don't lose ATDrake's pithy genre/reviews that appear below the stickies. I enjoy those very much and would hate to see them folded into a mere one-word category.

I agree. I would miss things like 'LGBT Festive SFnal Workplace Romance' or 'Xtian Sci-Fi Dystopian Fugitive Journey Thriller'

For me, the ATDrake label is the most reliable indicator of an interesting post.
