I've made it a point to look at the time before and at the end of a session to see if it was accurate but by the time my session has ended I've often forgotten my starting time. And those times that I haven't I've had interruptions or gotten bogged down in a passage that I had to think about or had to use the dictionary. My impression is that it estimates that I read faster than I actually do but I'm not really very confident in that impression. Barry |

Anyway I'm not really unhappy with the way the Kobo handles progress. I like to know how I'm coming along so at the start of each chapter I jump to the next chapter to see how many pages it is. Then I go back and begin reading. A couple of times I even went all through the book making notes about how many pages were in each chapter so I could just refer to those notes. But it really wasn't worth all that to me. Now that I know how to find out where I am in the Nook I kind of like that. I also like the Kindle's way of doing it with time left. All in all though, this isn't an important issue to me. It's pretty minor. I like it when it's there. I don't mind when it's not. Barry |

Ah yes, and how to you propose to read those on an ereader?
ETA: In other words: buying something you don't normally buy because it is on sale is NOT saving you 15% off the price, it is losing 85%. Last edited by DuckieTigger; 12-30-2017 at 08:12 PM. |

You were making it sound as if because the code wasn't good for Nooks or e-books it was useless for anything other than coffee. |

Having a standard 'page' across all of epub books means I can look at how many 'pages' there are in the book I'm reading and have a fair idea of how 'big' the book is, and thus pretty good idea of how long it would take me to read it. I know that a 200 page book is longer than a 150 page book, regardless of formatting. It's even more useful than the number of pages in a paper book, as that can vary by page size, font size, etc.
Having it be 'how many times I have to push this button' tells me nothing useful. I'm not even aware of pushing that button if I'm absorbed in a story. If I change the size of the font, the length of the book does not change. If you want to mark a particular place in an ebook, then highlight it. |

One thing I don't like about the Nook, or possibly just RMSDK in general, is the comically overzealous way it tries to avoid widows and orphans. Just take a look at these two photos (showing consecutive screens). It's ridiculous.

It’s not a chapter break or a scene break. It’s just one paragraph following another. Why is there so much white space? It’s absurd.

Simply assume that the fault lies in the ebook. Only because you bought it in a store doesn't mean it is a perfect epub. Only way to know for sure is to check inside of the book.

With a paperback I can look at how thick it is and a glance will tell me if it has a lot of words on a page with a small font and narrow borders. Again, it's a decent ballpark estimate. Moon+, which uses my preferred system, tells me how many screens I have left. That changes if I change font or margins but I hardly ever do that so it's a good guide. Still far from perfect. It's a bit like changing from American measures to metric. I know how big an inch is, or any multiple of that. I can visualize it. But give me the size in meters or cm and it doesn't tell me a lot. If I had a reason I could get used to it and it would be as useful to me. Barry |

The algorithm responsible for this falls apart when the paragraphs are very long, as shown in the photos. |

I see. Does Kobo in its kepub renderer do it smarter? On a Kindle I have never seen such a thing in either mobi, kf8, or kfx renderer - it will happily rip paragraphs apart if it doesn't fit on the page. Only whitespace with a real break at the end of chapter (as it should).
