I'm not too worried about having to cite pages from The Sonora Noose in a scholarly paper. But if my break is winding down, it is handy to know that 5 pages left = 5 screens of reading. Both styles are useful. But what is the overwhelming use case for e-books? Last edited by ZodWallop; 12-29-2017 at 03:53 PM. |

I always set my Kindles to how much time is left in the chapter – that way I know if I have time to read another chapter, or put it down. That's one main thing I like about the various Touch Kindles over the Keyboard and Non-Touch.

One problem with RMSDK's algorithm is that it makes effective page sizes inconsistent. A book I finished yesterday has shorter pages than the book I'm currently reading due to some difference in the underlying HTML. This inconsistency between books makes it harder to judge just how long a page is and, thus, how long a chapter is. Pages as screens avoids this issue. If nothing else, it would be nice to have an option, like Kobo has. |

I would be satisfied with that.

I think the next best solution I've seen is Amazon's location. People seem to get upset because that doesn't relate to anything you see but it does relate to the book in the device and gives you all the information you need to get a good sense of where you are. On my Kindle I tend to use time instead, not for any real reason that I'm aware of. But when I need a more accurate sense of where I am in the book for some reason I'll switch to locations for a while. The Nook gives me page numbers and that's okay. But it's probably the least informative method in an ereader. I think the only reason companies use page numbers in ereaders is that's what people have learned to expect from books. Barry |

I guess a lot of this depends on what you mean by a page. Is a page the amount of text in a physical page in some certain edition of a paper book? If that's the case then pages are rigid and unchanging. Or is a page everything from the top of the screen to the bottom? If that, then pages change when you change fonts and margins.
That's why I like the way Moon+ does it. A page is what I see on the screen in front of me. If it says there are 14 pages left in the chapter there are 14 of what I'm looking at. When I turn the page there are always 13 pages left no matter what some paper book says. Pages that are a fixed number of characters or a fixed number of words or are related to those in a paper book have little to do with what I'm reading in my device. Pages that relate to what I'm reading make more sense to me. And if I change the font the count changes. Totally rational, sensible and un-Wolfish. ![]() Barry |

Ereaders have one huge advantage over paper - you can turn off any progress. That is what I prefer, no pages, no location, no percent, or time left. Otherwise when approaching the end of a pbook (you can feel how little is left by feel) you either know something is going to happen soon to wrap the book up or you get sad knowing it is over soon.

I know I'm crazy to go back to the original thread topic; but is there any chance for a discount in the next few days?

I know it's stupid, but I find myself thinking "this thing doesn't know what speed I read at!" and I stick with pages. It's illogical and I admit it.

Kobo does that with kepub. Do you read kepub or ePub on your Aura?

You'd figure maybe B&N would have a sale what with New Years being a three day weekend. No dice so far though. Their website does say that they'll give 15% off of orders over $50 with promo code WISH. So that would bring it down to $102. I only paid a little less than that on Black Friday. |

It's just a scale but it gets pretty close after gauging your reading for a while. Mostly I just know that if it says 15 minutes for the next chapter and I've got 10 minutes to spare, I'll just put down the "book." Either that or I'll decide being 5 minutes late isn't all that bad.
