Find yourself a good cabinet maker instead. You'd be surprised at how many there are trying to make ends meet. Look up yellow pages, ask to visit the shop and tell them the level of quality you want. Challenges are good to their heart and they'll go out of their way to satisfy you, just for the sheer pleasure of doing a special piece. If you can't find one, look up specialty magazines such as Fine Woodworking.

I'm probably going to hire one to build a full wall to wall bookshelf in my loft...when I finally get my damn house. Thanks for the advice I'd much rather spend a bit more and get something made with pride than get something crappy at a store.

Luckily, the waxed shelves are now holding one printer, two scanners, two boxes of cables and disks and a load of files which (one day) I will scan and then discard.

It's a pity that the wax isn't good for books because I prefer a waxed finish on pine, and an oiled one on mahogany. I've even waxed my entire staircase. And I thought that oil or wax would be more environmentally-friendly, because i don't have to dispose of all those solvents.

Oh! A pickled finish is a misnomer. It is a whitish color added in a transparent finish to give the end result a resemblance to the old pickle barrels of lore. The salt preserving the pickled cucumbers bleached the wooden barrels white right through. An other way to bleach wood to white is to use peroxyde when the wood is raw. Hair treatment peroxyde works, but use the m orepowerful hair salon versions.

I'm afraid Patricia that pine is not a suitable wood for libraries or heavy computer equipment. Long stretches of shelves will sag with weight, even their own. Furthermore, pine exhibits pockets of gum or pitch that will glue to everything it comes in contact with, and there are only few and complicated ways of sealing it.

...
There's a bloke out at Eumundi Markets who does some beautiful stuff, lovely designs, even lovelier fit and finish. Stupidly, I never thought of getting him to build me a desk before I went out and bought one from Fake Ye Olde Crap. Ah, well, maybe it'll collapse after a few months, or I can give it away to my sister.

Cheers,
Marc

This weekend, in addition to being on call, the SUmkIII and I are converting my office (more of a habitat, really) to a den. Boxed up seven boxes of books and sent them off to CR Public Library, where they will more than likely go into the sale bin, but will eventually be converted to collection. And moved the Klipsch box speakers to the storage unit. Anyone in the market for a Yamaha stereo system and Klipsch speakers?

These guys are wizards!

I've read an article as to how they go about. They do use power tools like we do but under a whole different energy management.
A radial arm saw would not have an electric motor but a compressed air or a hydraulic motor. Everything hooked to a small diesel generated compressor.

Their goal is to use technology away from any power grid.

My cabinet maker has a diesel that has a shaft to the center of his shop and he wheels his shapers to the pto. The guys who make my wood flooring have a huge long shaft that run the length of their shop and they clutch onto it with several at once. At the end of the shaft, they have set up a sewing machine for their wives to make clothes.
