Not in my experience. "Operating system" has been pretty solidly defined for more than 50 years, now.

It seems to be a software issue, or maybe a driver issue. I never had this issue on firmwares <= 3.19 on my H2O. However ever since the 4.x releases, it happens to me fairly regularly.

It's annoying, but not annoying enough for me to revert the firmware.

I have the same issue. But it's not that bad because I have the sleep timer set to 20 minutes. So I rarely have to rewake.

Running 4.7.10413 my Kobo Aura HD, N204B has a buggy keyboard, inactive Beta Features & non-functioning screen initiated "Factory reset your eReader".

Keyboard will not output any numerals. Or will output only "8" or will output only 7,8,9 & 0.

After I do manual factory reset but before updating, presumably with the original firmware, there is a different looking keyboard running that does have functional number keys.

Kobo support indicate an awareness of this problem and write of efforts being made to fix the problem.

I emailed kobo about this and the tech I got insisted it was a hardware problem since a factory reset didn't fix it. Doh!

I fear that this bug hasn't been reported because their tech support thinks it is a hardware problem and isn't passing the bug along.

I have the same problem in a H2O ed2. So different hardwares but same problems ...

It's gotten even worse

(Hi, new poster, searched far and wide on the web and this forum after encountering this bug...)

I now have zeroes everywhere, in every book I have finished EVER. Total reading time is zero too. Tech support was no help by the way, started talking about losing reading stats when you do a factory reset.... Yeah that's not what I meant.

No likey.

btw, I also haven't seen a reading activity page after finishing a book for a long time now, is that also a known bug? It just jumps to my home screen after turning the last page...

The estimated time remaining in a KePub book still works, and seems to be accurate, but the stats for the current book shown on my "Activity" page are all zeros even after I have been reading for hours, and the total hours read has not increased.

The problem of the stats not being shown on the ratings page after finishing a KePub book is probably just a side-effect of this, it sees that the stats are all zero and so doesn't display them.

(Edit: The heroine in this book is called Terisa Morgan, or sometimes Lady Terisa of Morgan. I feel like I've heard that name somwhere ...)

And I reported the problem in the beta group. I think the response can be summed as:

"Special"? I don't know, but it probably depends on if you are to lazy to lift you finger after swiping across the screen while reading kepubs.
It doesn't stay unchanged, unfortunately. A book I half-read this summer now has 0's everywhere, and the total reading time is gone too.

If I want to revert to older firmware, will my reading progress then be restored from Calibre?

That wasn't my experience, but, I haven't been looking at the stats recently, so maybe there is something else going on. I can see reading stats for books I finished before this firmware version. But, I don't have many as I changed device shortly after this firmware came out and hence most show as zero due to this bug.

You can store and restore the reading status, but not the stats.

It was fine for me yesterday evening. Then this morning it synched (firmware number didn't change) and now all progress is gone.

I am torn between waiting on an update from Kobo and hoping it'll be magically restored like last time when everything went haywire, or reverting to an older software version and taking jan. 1st as a start of my new reading life

edit: I've installed 4.6.10075 and that is working fine, recording my reading time as well. Ah well.

Unless you patch your Kobo to stop a firmware update from occurring when you sync, you'll most likely have to turn off syncing or you very well could end up with the new firmware.

Again, not the behaviour I am seeing. My devices are showing stats for books finished before firmware 4.7.10413.

If the reading stats are important to you, then this is your only choice. Plus, you might want to do the patch JSWolf suggested.

My wifi is off and I am not syncing. Thanks for the reminder, I'll check if I've missed something

I'm happy for you, but I can't change what I saw happening before my eyes I hadn't done anything out of the ordinary, so perhaps it is influencing different devices in different ways?
