I just came back from Borders. Good thing (for them) it was busy. Bad thing (for me) I had a splitting headache. Stupid children running around everywhere.

When I was leaving, I saw this 10-12 year old girl with her mom and brother. The girl seriously had like 100 rat nests in her hair. It was disgusting. I can't believe people let their kids out of the house like that. I really really really wanted to say something (well I said something under my breath, but I don't think they heard me).
Sadly, I see this daily. Parent are too busy with their own lives and problems to deal with their children.
Filthy clothes, no attempt at grooming, no table manners.

It's a dark honey colour.
I've had some 'antique pine' waxes which went a nasty orange after a couple of years. Now I'm using a brand which doesn't go orange. It's made by Fiddes in Cardiff and I usually buy it at their factory shop. (I also like the idea of using locally-made products.)

I see it a lot too This one was appalling though. It seriously looked like the girl hadn't brushed her hair in two or more weeks.

I think the thing that bothers me the most are people who just let their kids run around. I went to an Indian restaurant the other day for lunch, and these two toddlers were running around the restaurant. The thing that scared me is the place is on a busy street and they could have easily run out the door and gotten hit by a car. Not to mention they were ruining my peaceful lunch.

hm, sounds lovely. i don't like the sound of that nasty orange colour though. pine darkens with age naturally already and tends to go a bit orangeish and i don't like that. i've got some pine stuff around the house too and i've been trying to decide whether i prefer it as is or if i should put a finish on it.

Maybe consult Yvan? He knows more about wood than most people.

well, i think i prefer very light or very dark wood, overall, so i've just left it plain so far. if i finished it i would want to stain it dark, but too much dark wood can get oppressive in small spaces, so i think i'll just leave it alone for now.

Every wood yellows and then browns with age. The only way to keep a finish light in color is to use a pickle finish. Just a white stain. You can also find waxes with a whitish base mixed in, those would be the easier DIYer recipe.

Be careful with waxes on bookshelves. The solvants mixed in will transfer to the books and cause futher deterioration. The only finishes good for books are polyurethanes, polyesthers and epoxies, the two latter being almost impossible to master for most people.

The carpenter speaks

Personally, I loooooove mahogany and rich, dark woods. I also think it is a sin to strip and restain antique furniture.

THINK OF THE PATINA!!!!
