And now the 9th title in this series, Malice at the Palace, has dropped to $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US. I note from the blurb that Lady Georgie is now 35th in line, not 34th - her brother must have had another kid .

Quote:
Thirty-fifth in line for the British throne, Lady Georgiana Rannoch becomes embroiled in royal wrongdoing in the ninth mystery from the New York Times bestselling author of Crowned and Dangerous.

Caught between her high birth and empty purse, Georgie is relieved to receive a new assignment from the Queen. The King’s youngest son, George, is to wed Princess Marina of Greece, and the Queen wants Georgie to be her companion: showing her the best of London—and dispelling any rumors about George’s libertine history.

The prince is known for his many affairs with women as well as men—including the great songwriter Noel Coward. But things truly get complicated when one of his supposed mistresses is murdered.

The Queen wants the whole matter hushed. But as the case unfolds—and Georgie's beau Darcy, as always, turns up in the most unlikely of places—their investigation brings them precariously close to the prince himself.

There are 4 pages of mystery & thrillers (58 titles) in the Amazon.co.uk Last Minute deals today:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/b/ref=s9_ac...d_i=5400977031

Too many to list individually, but I did notice some Ed McBain 87th Precinct titles.

Most (if not all) are 99p.

The Blood Card is the 3rd in the Stephens and Mephisto series by Elly Griffiths. It has dropped to £0.99 at Kindle UK.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blood-Card-...dp/B01ARXVSPU/

Spoiler:
Quote:
On the eve of the Queen's coronation, DI Stephens and Max Mephisto uncover an anarchist plot and a ticking bomb at the same time as solving the murder of a man close to them - from the author of the bestselling Dr Ruth Galloway mysteries.

'Mixes cosiness and sharpness in a way that recalls the best of Agatha Christie' Sunday Express (on Smoke and Mirrors)

Elizabeth II's coronation is looming, but the murder of their wartime commander, Colonel Cartwright, spoils the happy mood for DI Edgar Stephens and magician Max Mephisto. A playbill featuring another deceased comrade is found in Colonel Cartwright's possession, and a playing card, the ace of hearts: the blood card. The wartime connection and the suggestion of magic are for Stephens and Mephisto to be summoned to the case.

Edgar's ongoing investigation into the death of Brighton fortune-teller Madame Zabini is put on hold. Max is busy rehearsing for a spectacular Coronation Day variety show - and his television debut - so it's Edgar who is sent to New York, a land of plenty worlds away from still-rationed England. He's on the trail of a small-town mesmerist who may provide the key, but someone silences him first. It's Edgar's colleague, DS Emma Holmes, who finds the clue, buried in the files of the Zabini case, that leads them to an anarchist group intent on providing an explosive finale to Coronation Day.

Now it's up to Edgar, Max and Emma to foil the plot, and find out who it is who's been dealing the cards . . .

The Legacy is the first in the Children's House (Freyja and Huldar) series by Yrsa Sigurdardottir. Per SYKM, its original title seems to have been DNA, which really didn't need translation, I think, but... SYKM indicates this title won't be out in the US until Feb, 2018, but in the UK, it's already out and on sale for £0.99 at Kindle UK. I've enjoyed the author's Thóra Gudmundsdottir series, and look forward to trying this one.

link: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Legacy-Chil...dp/B01KTS4XRS/

Spoiler:
Quote:
The first in an exciting new series from the author of THE SILENCE OF THE SEA, winner of the 2015 Petrona Award for best Scandinavian Crime Novel.

The murder was meant as a punishment - but what sin could justify the method?

The only person who might have answers is the victim's seven-year-old daughter, found hiding in the room where her mother died. And she's not talking.

Newly promoted, out of his depth, detective Huldar turns to Freyja and the Children's House for their expertise with traumatised young people. Freyja, who distrusts the police in general and Huldar in particular, isn't best pleased. But she's determined to keep little Margret safe.

It may prove tricky. The killer is leaving them strange clues: warnings in text messages, sums scribbled on bits of paper, numbers broadcast on the radio. He's telling a dark and secret story - but how can they crack the code? And if they do, will they be next?

Medicus, apa Medicus and the Disappearing Dancing Girls, apa Ruso and the Disappearing Dancing Girls, both better titles than just Medicus IMO, is the first title in Ruth Downie's enjoyable (again IMO) historical Ruso/Tilla series set mostly in Roman Britain. It goes up and down in price a bit, but rarely as low as $0.99, which is what it is priced right now at both Kindle and Kobo US. If you have wanted to try this series and like to read in order, this would be a good time to grab this one...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/Medicus-Novel...dp/B0013TX7NY/
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/medicus

Spoiler:
Quote:
Divorced and down on his luck, Gaius Petreius Ruso has made the rash decision to seek his fortune in an inclement outpost of the Roman Empire, namely Britannia. In a moment of weakness, after a straight thirtysix-hour shift at the army hospital, he succumbs to compassion and rescues an injured slave girl, Tilla, from the hands of her abusive owner.

Now he has a new problem: a slave who won't talk and can't cook, and drags trouble in her wake. Before he knows it, Ruso is caught in the middle of an investigation into the deaths of prostitutes working out of the local bar. Now Ruso must summon all his forensic knowledge to find a killer who may be after him next.

With a gift for comic timing and historical detail, Ruth Downie has conjured an ancient world as raucous and real as our own.

The Bull Slayers: Inspector Faro No 9 by Alanna Knight

Travelling incognito on the Queen’s business involving a royal scandal which could imperil the throne, Faro’s fears are justified whem he leaves Edinburgh for the Scottish Borders into an area ruled over by the Elriggs, feudal barons still hunting with bow and arrow, making their own laws with murder treated as accident. Among the sinister forces at work, the ancient white cattle also roam dangerously free and Faro himself becomes a target for the Elrigg’s deadly games.

Castle of Foxes by Alanna Knight

Tanya Durris, widowed after a theatre fire in Victorian London, unexpectedly inherits Devenick Castle, her late husband’s ancestral home in the ruggedly beautiful Scottish Highlands. It comes with a price - her own life. Haunted by her dead husband’s voice, Tanya struggles against ghostly horrors, while Lord Edward, Queen Victoria’s godson, and Gavin Duthie both want her love - or is it her inheritance? And which one is trying to kill her?

Alanna Knight has written more than forty novels

Magic Mirror, apa Deadly Reflections, is the first in the Georgia Lee Maxwell series by Michaela Thompson (pen name for Michaele Thompson Friedman). It is free right now at Kindle US.

link: https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Mirror-...dp/B00EJXIO7U/

Spoiler:
Quote:
"Georgia Lee Maxwell ... is a delight, a bright and funny lady with a breezy narrative voice." -Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine

" … a brisk and witty book full of sharply unexpected events and packed with wonderfully robust characters." -Publisher's Weekly

SACRE BLEU! THEY KILLED A MAN FOR A MIRROR!

Florida transplant Georgia Lee Maxwell doesn't take to Paris at first, despite the fact that she's at least leaving a no-good man and a hated job as a society editor. Now she's a Paris correspondent, thank you very much—a dream come true for any journalist.

There's just a slight down side—she arrives in freezing rain, gets caught in a traffic jam caused by a bomb scare, and hates her apartment; but the real Bonjour is finding herself face down on a museum floor during a robbery. "Killed for a boring story!" she thinks. But as it happens, she isn't the one who dies. Three terrifying masked gunmen shoot the unfortunate security guard.

They could have stolen all the treasures of Monte Cristo's cave, so to speak, but it turns out they've made off with only a mirror. True, it once belonged to the French seer Nostradamus, but it may be the museum's least valuable item.

Does it have some prophetic ability? Does someone know something the gendarmes don't? Here's what Georgia Lee knows: If she finds out first, she's a journalistic hero. If she doesn't, she's dead.

Michaela Thompson's ability to bring alive a locale shines here, and when the locale is Paris, what's not to like? The writing is crisp, the protagonist witty, and the mystery is twisty. A great choice for armchair travelers! Also for fans of Cara Black, Michael Bond, and of course, the great Georges Simenon. Admirers of Hank Phillippi Ryan and the HBO show, THE NEWSROOM, will love the journalistic background.

A Legacy of Spies by John le Carré is the most recent (2017) after a long long gap in the George Smiley series - although from what I've read in a review, it features a younger main protagonist, Peter Guillam. It has dropped to $4.99 at Kindle Canada as part of their 11th day of Christmas, so almost certainly for today only. You need to make sure you are in the Kobo Canada store before the link/pricing will work.

link: https://www.kobo.com/ca/en/ebook/a-legacy-of-spies-1

Spoiler:
Quote:
The undisputed master returns with a riveting new book—his first Smiley novel in more than twenty-five years

Peter Guillam, staunch colleague and disciple of George Smiley of the British Secret Service, otherwise known as the Circus, is living out his old age on the family farmstead on the south coast of Brittany when a letter from his old service summons him to London. The reason? His Cold War past has come back to claim him. Intelligence operations that were once the toast of secret London, and involved such characters as Alec Leamas, Jim Prideaux, George Smiley and Peter Guillam himself, are to be scrutinized by a generation with no memory of the Cold War and no patience for its justifications.

Interweaving past and present so that each tells its own intense story, John le Carré has spun a single plot as ingenious and thrilling as the two predecessors on which it looks back: The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. In a story resonating with tension, humor and moral ambivalence, le Carré and his narrator Peter Guillam present the reader with a legacy of unforgettable characters, old and new.

Three titles in the Captain Rawson series by Edward Marston have dropped to £1.90 at Kindle UK. From the blurbs, this looks to be almost as much a military fiction series as a mystery/thriller series, but SYKM does list it, so I'm posting it here. (I am actually quite hopeful my son might like this, as it seems to be sort of similar to the Cornwell/Sharpe series and even a little bit to the Scarrow/Cato & Macro series in that there seems to be a little bit of mystery and a lot of battle in them...)

Anyway, titles on sale are:
Note: The first title in the series, Soldier of Fortune, is available free to read via KU in the UK, if you have that, or it's £2.48 in the UK and $3.03 in the US, not too horrible prices, if you want to try the series in order...
