Oh, I hear you! I really like to walk and I walk a lot in good weather, but winter defeats me, between the cold and the dark and there's already snow on the ground, which makes footing treacherous and narrow roads even more so. I try to force myself out for even a short walk each day, for some fresh air and to battle the winter blues, but I don't always succeed.

It's just that I know that if I give in now, I'll be looking to shift not less than ten pounds come the New Year, but more like 15. I'm trying for good days in between the celebratory ones.

Good for you, Paul, being down and staying down. I wish I had only 3kg to lose, much less 2! I'm closer to 4 and that's with a lower goal weight which I will not reveal, being true to my sex.

I lost ten pounds since November 17th. I'm on a restricted diet due to IBS/Gastritis diagnosis. I can only eat about 1000/1200 calories a day. I'm on a low fiber diet.

I pretty much live off of boiled chicken breast, white rolls, bananas, apples.

It seems with Gastritis you have no appetite so you don't feel deprived. I've learned a lot though. Fiber is something my body can't handle. So no salads which are my favorite. No whole grains, basically every diet food with few exceptions and no fried and fatty foods and worst of all no chocolate.

Oh, Blossom, how miserable; I love salad, too. But congratulations on the weight loss! Ten pounds in a month is terrific.

That sounds grim Blossom. I do hope things improve for you with the IBS/Gastritis.

A few years ago my doctor, having told me I needed to lose (ahem) 10 kilograms, gave me the best advice I have ever had. Don't go on any special sort of diet - eat sensibly of course, but eat the things I like, just in smaller portions. And it really worked for me.

I lost that 10 kg in about six months, and have kept it off in the last couple of years. It was hard at first because I felt so hungry, but then of course the stomach gets smaller, and it is all bearable. Best of all, I didn't get the cravings for sweet things because I didn't cut them out altogether, just reduced the amount.

Good advice! I have tried to do that myself, but have wavered a bit lately and portion sizes have grown. I need to apply some discipline to my eating habits once more (but maybe after the holiday period ).

Congratulations, Bookpossum! I think keeping it off is even harder than losing it in the first place.

I regret to say I'm more of an "all or nothing" type person. It's easier for me to have none of something than to have a little or even a reasonable amount. I'm also not that good about tolerating being hungry for very long. What works best for me is cutting out starches and sugars and letting myself pretty much eat at will from everything else. The problem with this approach is that it's fine as long as I'm feeding myself, but when out (and especially at this time of year) there are temptations galore and I haven't schooled myself to resist. It's a very slippery slope.

A slippery slope indeed. My problem is that I get irritable if I'm hungry and something is stopping me from eating, even if it's my own choice. I need the exercise to burn those calories, and I'm not getting it right now for a number of reasons (RSI in both arms, cold weather, my treadmill is packed away to give more space for Christmas). I need to come up with a plan...

Buy a skipping rope and find a spot - garden path or wherever - where you can skip. Of course that wouldn’t work if it’s snowing already where you are. Ah, but that wouldn’t work with the RSI. Oh dear.

No, the RSI is really restrictive at the moment. It seems to have more or less passed from my left arm, so I'm hopeful the right will recover too. Not sure I could skip though, my kids would never let me live it down .

I find I can rack up a fair number of steps in a supermarket. You feel like an idiot swiftly walking up and down aisles but I figure it helps. Obviously you need to pick a bigger market and go when it's not busy so you're not dodging carts and shoppers. "Mallwalking" is a thing here; it wouldn't be worth it for me to drive to a mall just to walk and I dislike malls on general principle, but the supermarket is a closer compromise and I can do my grocery shopping while I'm at it so it's not entirely time wasted.

Bookpossum, I have far too much respect for my knees to jump rope!

I do make the most of my supermarket visits, and if I visit a mall I almost always make my step target. I've just got to stop being a wuss and get out there in the cold and rain...

Oh, I love mince pie and it seems to have fallen out of favor here. Maybe it's just as well. Have a slice for me and don't stint the brandy butter.
