My Oasis has one dead LED

wow! that's bad, and i hope you can get your replacement soon that hopefully has the other aspects in excellent order (uniformity of lighting, no color gradients, etc.)

that shadow looks like what a couple of my Oasis 1's looked like with light settings 6-8, but more extreme. there were no blown LEDs in my case, just that not all 10 were uniform in their intensity when driven at "low levels."

LEDs do fail, but rarely. it's my guess that in normal circumstances, as you suggested, the battery will die before the LEDs do. i think you just got a bad one i would find it hard to believe that is a result of you using it while bathing.

No, a led should not have blown. I wasn't trying to imply that it magically start working again as simply temporary effect. But Amazon's understanding of water resistance is quite different from yours with deliberate underwater adventures. I don't believe that you need to keep your Kindle out of the bathroom, just try to keep it above the water line would be a good compromise to longevity.

My watch, for example, is supposedly "water resistant to 100 meter". I picked one like that because I have a fishtank and want to be able to put my hand in in a hurry without having to worry about my watch. Actually, I need to rinse it off with fresh water afterwards to get all the salt off, so I avoid dunking it when I can. (Salt water together with enough oxygen is a great way put rust on stainless steel in a hurry).

That's not completely true. From the Kobo Aura One specs: "IPX8 rating. Waterproof for up to 60 minutes in up to 2 metres of water." Note that it is water PROOF rather than water RESISTANT as the watch you mentioned in a later post is. The H2O did quite have as high water proof rating, but it did have a setting for the IR touch on the screen so that water droplets on the screen didn't cause issues.

I used it one inch (at most) underwater for two minutes (at most). Well within the specified range, so it really shouldn't have caused a problem with the device, but I'll not be doing it again.

Anyway, I don't think my LED failure is connected, it happened a couple of days after the last time I used it in the bath (when only the base of the Oasis touched the water on that occasion).

I ordered this sleeve to use with my replacement Oasis. It will fit in this with the cover. I want to be sure it doesn't get knocked when I'm out and about. I feel the exposed metal part is vulnerable to knocks, and the interior of this sleeve is all padded.

Well, I'm certainly glad the replacement arrives on Sunday, as another LED has died. I can't believe this. I just don't understand it at all. I'm just sitting here, reading, doing nothing wrong, and it's spontaneously having lights die on me. Very peculiar indeed.

Edit: It seems the second is more of a light distribution problem, as when I turn the brightness up to full, I can see the large splotch (like a dark patch of newsprint) at the dead LED, while the second patch, which is lower down in my photo, actually disappears. Anyhow, it's still not a good situation.

With brightness at full, the dead LED actually flickered for a short time. V. strange.

If you want to believe the hype of an advertisement. IPX8 is merely protection against submersion, certified to a specific depth and time which can vary and needs to be disclosed for it to be meaningful. Oasis 2, Aura One, new H2O are all the same 2 meter 60 minutes. That is just that - take device, dunk it under water that deep and long under specific conditions, and it needs to still function afterwards.

At first glance the "lesser" rating the old H2O had with IP67 appears to be less protection against elements, but not necessary. IP67 also needs to protect against submersion (true only has to be tested for 1 meter 30 min), but is dust tight on top of that.

Going from IP67 to IPX8 in Kobo's case is a step in the wrong direction, IMO. They should have gone to IP68 to retain protection against dust.

Good luck with your replacement. And hopefully you shall not be so lucky again to have not just one, but two leds give up functioning properly. I don't believe in random chance here any more - something happened to your Oasis - may it be a lemon with faulty electronics/assembly or accidental damage.

Thanks. Yes, so when this new one leaves the house with me, it will be in its cover (as usual) and a new padded sleeve which I've bought. I've had a lot of ereaders (and other devices) and never damaged them, so I think it's just one of those things, but I'll be treating the new one with kid gloves.

Well, what's the point in it claiming to be waterproof up to 2 meters for one hour if I don't, really. I no longer believe these claims.

Why were you putting the Oasis in the bath water? Isn't it hard to read in that position?

Oh and I doubt the light failure had anything to do with the bath. Sounds like a couple of bad bulbs. Which happens. We had a fresh out of the box led fail.

Just experimenting with my new toy. It looked perfect under one inch of water - it was only for a couple of minutes and wasn't uncomfortable.

Did you? With this Oasis? (Edit: I see you don't have an Oasis, scrap that.).

I only noticed the issue (with the one LED originally) when I was trying out the new touchscreen disabled function. I had the auto light adjuster on, and it changed the brightness to such a level that this problem was extremely visible. This was after three weeks of use. I don't really know if the problem was always there and I wasn't aware of it as I don't use the light that much, or if it happened over time.

Edit: the problem with the second LED is definitely new, though.
