I am the proud owner of a prs-505 and extremely excited about the new releases. I am wanting one or the other, but unsure of which one I would like the most. First off, huge fan of calibre and I use it to convert all my files so I can read them on my 505, so I know that I will need that program still if it will work with the Kindle 2 and 700...so that's first. I have a ton of books that I read but mainly romance novels (dirty grin), I would love to have a clock somewhere on the main screen so that I know how many hours have passed, I would also love like a calendar feature or something like that if it's possible with either one of these products, does anyone know if its possible to put like a calendar on either one of these or if it might have that feature? That would definitely make it a selling point for me, because then I wouldn't have to carry a PDA and my ebook reader. And also, about the read back feature on the K2 will it work for other formats of books aside from the books from amazon? Anyway, I would greatly appreciate all advice thank you....oh and maker of calibre....YOU ROCK

Why do you want to upgrade? Any particular reason? I believe there are downloadable calendars here on MR (just not sure what devices it is for). Also, you should check out the Romance group:

I love my 505, but I would love to have new capabilities, like the k2 read to you feature, or the touch screen, I am leaning more in the direction of the K2 seeing as how it has the wifi (free) and the read to you feature, along with a couple of other reasons, but with the new sony I was looking at some pictures on here and I do see the difference in it's readability with the the new one compared to the 505, granted it's not a major difference, but more so than I thought and definitely noticeable. I just love to read and all the new features sound so very interesting just to give it a shot and try out, the read to you feature would be great for when I am driving, since it never works out with me trying to read and drive lol...j/k, only do that at stoplights

It will actually be a positive for you to have a Sony and a Kindle. A lot more options will be open to you.

Also, K2 doesn't have WiFi... it has a cell phone... I know small difference but it is important to understand. If you are outside of the Sprint network it won't work. I think you are better off spending money on books for your current reader. The only reason I got my Kindle when I already had the PRS500 is that I bought it with some lottery poll winnings. Now, if you just want a new gadget, go for it. BOb |

the Duck is right, I have both and it's been great. I no longer have the Kindle 1 because I sold it in order to afford the Kindle 2. I really miss my kindle and can't wait for the kindle 2 (mine is shipping on March 2nd). I would go with the Kindle since you already have the PRS-505. I read primarily on the PRS-505, even when I had the Kindle, but I bought most of my books from Amazon. It's the best situation if you can afford both!

Will the Kindle support any format?
Hi, I'm new to this forum but not to using e-books.
I have an OLD HP iPAQ which works very well but apparently is never going to wear out. I borrow most of my books by downloading them from the public (free) libary. I'd like to get a Kindle 2 but only if I can continue to take advantage of the library's electronic lending. Do you know if I can do this on the Kindle 2? The information says it supports several formats but I want to be sure before I buy one. Thank you for your input. Sandy |

OP: If you want to spend money, steer clear of the 700... it looks like utter crap. Go to Borders they have it on display. The screen is blurry, will get scratched from using the touchscreen, and the "back light" makes it look cheap... Which it's NOT...
Also, has anybody heard about this new little device? It looks really hi tech ![]() It's called a Newton =D |

> 700 or Kindle 2 ?
Yes. Actually, I'm sticking with my Kindle (1) and PRS-505 for now. Neither of the follow-on devices offer enough to entice me to upgrade. But, I'm *really* glad I have one of each brand. The Kindle is my favorite -- it feels better in my hands when I'm reading. And, having the Amazon store is one of the best things about the Kindle. Would that Amazon could sell to everyone or that the other stores offered the variety (and prices) that Amazon does. |

The PRS-700 has side-LEDs, and a light-diffusing layer over the screen to "spread" the light. |

As I've posted in other threads, my husband has a 700 and I have a 505. The screen on the 700 isn't as good as the 505, but I don't think it is "utter crap". It is very readable. I'm happy with my 505, but an definitely comfortable reading on my husband's 700.
To the original poster--I agree with the others...if you're going to buy another, I'd go for the Kindle--that way you'd have the best of both worlds. And once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy to format shift so that you can have your content on either device. dordale ![]() |

There's nothing wrong with the 505 - but if you must 'upgrade' go Kindle 2 rather than 700.
There is no point buying a more expensive device with an inferior screen. The primary function of the device is reading, so all the other functionality should (in my opinion) be judged on how much it improves the reading experience. Some of the 700's features really do work well - but I think the screen quality outweighs it. If I had not seen a 505, I wouldn't have been as concerned about the 700 as the screen is better than an LCD. But having seen the 505 I've got a minimum benchmark for screen quality, and while the Kindle 2 looks to exceed it neither the Kindle 1 nor the 700 do. |

Totally go with the Kindle 2. The PRS 700 is not at all a product that should be sold.
![]() I'm bitter though as mine has been at the Sony depot almost as long as I've owned it. |
