Now since 5.8.11 is greater than 5.8.7, there is no jailbreak for that firmware. |

Updating to 5.9.2
My Hotfix may not be working on 5.9.2. After auto-updating, the Screensavers Mod no longer works, and attempting to launch KUAL gives me a “The Selected application could not be started” error.
Do I have to reinstall KUAL or is my jailbreak broken? I’m using a PW3 3G, and the first characters of my serial number are G090 G5. Also this is my first time posting here, so please tell me if I’m doing something wrong. |

Your jail break is not broken.
Which "hotfix"? There are more than one of them, give link. |

It is possible to jail break that version. The current firmware (after you JB it) is 5.9.2, and next to nothing has been posted here about that version. You will have to discover for yourself. Do not let it update. Until you decide if you will jail break the device. If you decide to jail break it, even if you may not be able to turn the lights off, post here. - - - - - The screen does not have a back light. The screen only has a front light. It does not draw enough power to make a noticeable difference to the run-time of the battery at any setting. Certainly not at the lowest setting. The light can not been seen in a dark room unless you take the bezel off. You would do better for power saving if you just have Amazon remove the special offers. That way it would not be trying to call home at regular intervals to check for new advertisements. Last edited by knc1; 12-03-2017 at 08:27 AM. |

The firmware on my device is 5.8.9.0.1, that's what I meant, when posting the quote from the first post of this thread. It says to post here if you have this version. I didn't let it update, never turned on the wifi. I just want to jailbreak it to be able to turn off the backlight completely. That is, if a jailbreak is required for that.

Jail break to turn off light
That is two activities: *) jail break *) turn off the light If the minimum setting of the light is too bright for you, then you need to jail break it to gain access to the system. That does not mean you will be able to turn off the light. It only means that the jail break is required to gain access to the system. There is no back light to turn off. There is only a front light. |

It's not that the minimum setting is too bright, it's just it's there (I checked in a dark room), and still must be draining the battery, even if not that noticeable. I've read about KUAL, and that the first step is to jailbreak the device. I'm not planning to connect it to the internet at all, only to my pc to load books in it with calibre. That should not connect it to the internet too, I guess. So I'm actually not sure now. If it doesn't worth it in terms of the battery life, maybe I should leave it as it is. But then again, what if I'd like to connect to wifi someday, and it updates? Then, as I understand, I'll loose the opportunity to jailbreak it? |

That is correct, if it loads a different firmware version, it can not be jail broken.
Jail breaking it now will do no harm, even if you don't use the features it offers. Like anything that is useless at the immediate moment (like a spare tire in trunk) but might be useful in the future (when not having a spare tire + a flat tire == lots of walking). |

@Ufw: I'd strongly suggest to jailbreak your device. Turning the light off completely does not require any modifications to the system itself besides the jb. Just install KUAL and Vlasoftsoft's CoolReader port for Kindles (a freeware addon part of his shareware PBChess app).
Then do it like me: Only use CoolReader for your sideloaded books. (Believe me, this is definitely world's best eBook reading app if it comes to configurability and other useful features...) Inside CR you can switch light off completely - and the device remembers it even if you leave CR and use the standard Amazon software. Only a restart switches light on again... I have finally got around to jailbreaking my Kindle Voyage B054 09 fw 5.6.1 and run into the pw protection roadblock for initial firmware for both primary and secondary sources. What do I need to do next?

knc1, Antinoos, thank you for your advice. I'm trying to do what the instructions say, but I'm stuck on step 5 (which is the first step in my case). It's not very clear, what my device should show after I upload the .bin file on it, and enter ";installHtml". I have no response whatsoever. Nothing happens. Is it supposed to be so?

If not, look for it via your PC in the /documents directory of the Kindle's USB storage. If nothing is happening, then check for anything that might have opened the compressed archive. MacOSx is famous here for trying to turn it into a "safe archive" which ruins it. Other OS sometimes have similar actions to destroy the functionality of that special "non-safe" archive. It is suppose to be "non-safe" that is what makes it work. |

@Ufw: Did you really start with step 5? I suppose you must start with step 4, i.e. apply the large downgrade fw file of the initial factory build first. Step 5 only works with this special firmware...
