I haven't read the book. If it's anything like the movie this is not a high priority for me. Maybe I'll (at least) look into it.

I thought the book was OK (when I read it decades ago). All but a big chunk of the end, of course. The way-too-long and pointless stream of consciousness nonsense was as annoying as the movie's half-hour long hallucinogenic, first-person-shooter roller-coaster ride that correlated with it.

I don't remember that? The "first-person-shooter roller-coaster ride" matches the Through the Star Gate section of the book, which, like the rest of the novel is told in third person narration.

If anything, fans of the movie have criticized the book for being too direct and explanatory, deflating the mystery of Kubrick's movie.

Yes. The first-person-shooter was referring to the movie not the book. And it does match the "Star Gate" section of the book. Regardless of the book's POV, both mediums' treatment of that event were overly long and monotonous.

It doesn't demonstrate that science fiction promotes poorer reading, it just demonstrates that some people's prejudices against science fiction lead them to poorer reading. If you're reading sloppily because of you're prejudices, that's on you, not on the material.

Yes, I read it. Since the text is the same, it illustrates that it is their prejudices that trigger their poorer reading, not the material itself.
