If I'm talking about books with friends, I always use the word "read". It doesn't matter if it's an ebook or an audiobook. I don't use the word "listen".

I think "watch" is sort of shorthand for "watch and listen".

When I watch TV at home I often have the closed captions on (I don't have a hearing problem but sometimes the background music is too loud, or maybe I'm watching a British show with a strong regional accent). So I guess in that case I am watching, listening, and reading all at once!

Watch, but I run into trouble if they are in a foreign language and subtitled; then am I "reading" or "listening"? I can't make up my mind as it seems I get grumped at if I confuse "read" and "listen" .

Maybe I'll just concentrate on the popcorn when it's movie time, and for eBooks and paper books get my wife to read them to me; dang, another problem, that will get me in trouble again, is that "listening" or "reading" when I am being read to by my wife from a paper book or an eBook?

Mmmmmm, is that eBook, EBook, E-Book, e-Book, ebook, or e-book; I sense troubled seas ahead .

I see no reason not to listen to paper books if that's what you want to do. If, afterward, when you've listened to it and I've read it, that might make for an interesting part of the discussion, especially if you seem to have a good understanding of the content. I'll probably want to learn your technique.

I do use "listen" in a discussion if I've heard the audiobook but that's because I know that matters to some people. It's just a courtesy. And, maybe in a way, it's a bit defensive on my part as well. Then if they realize I heard it they won't accuse me of misrepresenting what I'd done. I'm not sure if that's actually happened to me but in forum discussions I have heard other people chastised for that a few times. I don't think it's valid but I don't want to let things get sidetracked if I can avoid it.

I've been in ebook forums since long before audiobooks became a "thing" and since they have I've found that people who have listened to a book often discuss it as intelligently as those who read it.
