To a degree this depends on the operating system. In the case of Linux the quickest, easiest way to learn programming is to use the built-in shell programming language -- probably bash. There are plenty of tutorials and references online, but I'd recommend getting a good book for instruction and reference.

Something that you need for an actual project.

But for an actual suggestion, try one of the interpreted languages. BASIC or Python 3.
