The Kobo WiFi? If so, the WiFi was much chunkier.

Just speculating here...if you had root (so you could see the hidden partition) and loaded a file explorer app, could you then open epubs sideloaded to the B&N partition with the stock reader? Opening the file from within the file explorer?

I know you don't intend to root yours, and I don't plan to either (anytime soon anyway). As I said, just wondering. I haven't tinkered with an E-ink Nook since the Simple Touch. I really like that I could mess around with my Glowlight 3, but don't really have any compelling reason to. I don't keep much on my reader so the partition isn't an issue. I'd much rather browse what I have from my PC and load as needed.

I am having two minor frustrations with my new NOOK:

1. For some of the side loaded books the cover thumbnail images do not display. I prepare all my books the same way; don't know why some work and others don't.

2. Side loading new books sometimes wipes out all the shelves I had previously created. This is particularly vexing because the creating shelves on the NOOK is laborious. I've about decided to give up and just use the search function to reach individual titles.

Any insight from Android jockeys out there would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I actually have root now. I have wondered about that question, too. I just gave it a try, and the answer is yes. However, that book does not show up when I return to the stock launcher and My Library. I also tried the reverse - opening up a book downloaded by the stock Nook reader with an installed reading app. That did not work. I had only a blank screen.

I use calibre to sideload and so far no issues with covers. I haven't loaded too many so it could very well be luck.

I gave up on shelves on any reader a long time ago.

Thanks for the report. Good to know there's a workaround if you wanted to use the main memory and stock reader for sideloads. As for the reverse, the Nookbook was DRM-free?

After a little experimentation, I have a hunch the key to this device is patience. You see how it lags going from one screen to another, or when turning pages with the buttons.

I wonder, when my PC tells me that the NOOK has been ejected safely, if it isn't still working on transferring files. The last couple of times I let the cable stay connected for a few minutes after ejecting, and things have gone a bit better.

Also, I have noticed some books display their thumbnail cover, only to have it disappear after side-loading other books, then seeing it again later. So the thumbnail created by the NOOK exists, the device just isn't always displaying it when it should.

It does seem that those thumbnail images stay put after they've been on the device a while; it's the newly side-loaded files that behave the worst. So again, patience.

I've don't think I'll add any more books to the device for a while; maybe I'll try the shelves again. I really think it was additional downloading that wiped them out.

I just don't see it. It looks no more like that Kobo than it looks like the Kindle Paperwhite or any other black e-reader.

The Glowlight 3 is clearly a call back in design to the Nook ST. Any other similarities are coincidental.

I ordered one yesterday. I checked the better half's Nook STwG and there's only something like 350MB on the SD card, so there should be no issues.

The plan is to set it up with my account (we share a B&N account) and sideload all the same books on her current Nook so when she opens it, it's good to go.

It'll be weird having one in the house. I'll be jealous of the hardware and annoyed by the partitioning decision.

Sounds good. I haven't bitten yet. I'll probably wait until the next sale now. It's hard to justify buying another eReader when I've already got too many of them in my "collection."

With my nook simple touch with glow-light, I have had no problems since I started doing all usb operations after putting the nook in sleep mode. The nst is not done when the pc says safe to unplug, always give it a half minute.

As for finding books, my phone has a clone** of the nooks library loaded on it, I then use calibre companion to find next book then search function on the nook.

bernie

**reading list plug-in makes this a simple process.

Today I picked up a Nook Glowlight 3 at my local BarnesandNoble for the Black Friday price of $100. It is unbelievably light and does feel great in the hand. While I always liked my simple touch with glowlight reader, this new glowlight 3 is so much better! Even the page turn buttons are better....so much easier to press!! I am going to enjoy reading with this one.
So far I have seen no issue with the covers that some have mentioned. I have downloaded some books from barnesandnoble and sideloaded others using calibre. Happy camper so far.

Would someone with the Nook Glowlight 3 kindly tell me if it can access WiFi on 5Ghz, or is it limited to WiFi on 2.4Ghz?

BTW, I had bought it the day it came out. I went back on Black Friday, and they gave me a $20 credit. YMMV, but it's worth a try.
