Yes, laptops are routinely x-rayed (and sometimes even subjected to additional swab testing for explosive residue). You have to take them out of your carry-on bag unless you have one of the new TSA-approved laptop bags.
What I'm wondering is if the Kindle is also supposed to be taken out of the bag to run through x-ray separately? |

My 505 has recently had a trip to/from Scotland with no ill effects from the x-ray machine. Also, my 505 had to be x-rayed on Tuesday (just once) and again it came thought with no ill effects.
My wife went for her citizenship interview on Tuesday so my 505 had to be scanned before we could go into the building past security. And she's been approved no problem. Now all that is left is for her to get her oath ceremony in about 2 weeks. |

But then again, I don't mention my 505. It just gets x-rayed no problem. |

Every time I've gone through security with my Kindle it has remained in the bag and no questions were asked.

It seems having the unit turned off rather than in sleep mode might just might have something to do with it.
And, pb, I doubt Amazon would have replaced the Kindle twice for the flight attendant if it could have been chalked up to co-incidence. |

Still, IF what the first person said was true, IF amazon had knowledge of this, it would prove differently. I'm still waiting on an "official" statement from them. At least that would put the subject to rest. ![]() |

But, it seems to me if they replaced the device under warranty the felt that it was due to a manufacturing defect and not and external influence. Or, I didn't read the post is question... did the flight attendant say they made her pay 50% for the replacement? BOb |

The post
" Initial post: Jul 28, 2008 9:52 AM PDT Last edited by the author on Jul 28, 2008 9:53 AM PDT S. Baker says: Or anyone who rides on a plane a lot...... I'm a flight attendant and bought a Kindle to read during "down time" on my long flights. I am now on KINDLE NUMBER 3! When speaking with Kindle Support this last time, the agent informed me that they are getting feedback regarding airport x-ray machines damaging the Kindle's screen. Both of my previous Kindle's screens developed black spots on them, one went completely black. I asked the agent about any possible changes to the Kindle screen when version 2 comes out, but she had no information regarding that. She did replace my Kindle yet again, which is great. I guess I'll just use this one until this screen goes black and see what happens when I call back to have my THIRD one replaced........ You would think that they would've looked into this problem as the Kindle is PERFECT for flight attendants and people who like to read on planes. Anyone else have this issue???" |

The other post
" Initial post: Nov 3, 2008 8:14 AM PST S. J. Rafferty says: I bought a Kindle five days ago, used it on the bus from airport parking. Put it in its case and then inside a sweater in my carry on, which went through the x-ray machine. At the gate, the screen was fried - black and white stipes. Kindle confirms that this is a known issue. Obviously, all airport security scanners are not the same, but any probability that this could happen again makes me not want to replace the Kindle. I don't think you can have your Kindle bypass security. It's going through the scanner or getting confiscated. Even if being fried is a 1 in 100 chance, its a pretty significant problem for a device that largely addresses the traveller. Amazon only offered to replace the Kindle - in three weeks. No accommodation for the fact that I was on a trip and had business documents sent to my Kindle. Further questions about a post-return/warranty event were not reassuring. No extended warranty available. No fixed price for factory service. And, unlike other electronic devices, no retailer to complain to or third-party service. If the airport scanner fries your Kindle in 13 months, you are out the full purchase price without any upgrade accommodation. And if you don't buy a new Kindle, you lose your library. I can only get a refund on unread books because I had them less than 7 days. Had this happened later in the 30-day trial period, I would be out that as well - even though I could never access them. These seem like pretty onerous and discouraging policies for early adopters. And the clerk who sent the return label told me that it was up to me to complain by email only. No supervisor or Amazon policy person wanted to talk in person. " |
