My eighth grade English teacher recommended Heinlein's Glory Road as long as we didn't tell anyone she did it. I guess she didn't want to have any parents complaining to the school board for suggesting that we read books written for adults.

One example was her belief that eating meat was bad and led to violence. But teacher, the Inuit are among the least violent people on the planet and their diet is almost exclusively animal based. Also historical evidence is that Hitler was a vegetarian. Bad David! Letting ugly facts destroy beautiful hypotheses. Admittedly, I had to admire other things about her. While she was at university, she participated in civil rights and anti-Vietnam war activities and was involved to some extent with the SDS. She had met quite a few of the people that we only heard about on the news and could be convinced to talk about them. | |

Michael J Sullivan's third book in the The Riyria Chronicles, The Death of Dulgath, is currently free today at Amazon. It doesn't look like the ebook is available at B&N or Kobo.

Jo Clayton - Diadem from the stars series

The third book in her series Diadem from the Stars is $1.99 at amazon.com https://www.amazon.com/Irsud-Diadem-...rds=jo+clayton It has not been the first book on sale, I only need the 4th and then I have the first 5. I wonder why they do not re-print also the other 4, I bought some of the paper books long time ago, and I distinctly remember that the series consisted of 9 books, plus 3 extras. |

A few bargains from Simon & Schuster's Saga Press imprint, which is DRM-free at Kobo at least, available in Canada & the US (price should be the same at all the usual retailers): @ $1.99: The Starlit Wood: New Fairy Tales edited by Dominik Parisien & Navah Wolfe. This won the 2017 Shirley Jackson Award for Best Anthology and placed 3rd on the annual Locus Awards list, according to ISFDB. IIRC, one or two of the stories for it made it to the Hugo finalists, and contributors include Charlie Jane Anders, Garth Nix, Marjorie M. Liu, Aliette de Bodard, Naomi Novik, and more. Apparently, there are interior illustrations, as well. @ $2.99 each: The Icarus Corps futuristic vs Earth-conquering aliens milSF novel trilogy by Zachary Brown (ISFDB) which the ISFDB notes that the publisher claims is a pseudonym for a NYTimes bestselling Nebula & World Fantasy Award finalist. In order: The Darkside War, Titan's Fall, Jupiter Rising |

Heinlein has had various controversies, but I think teachers are generally discouraged from recommending SciFi. At least they were when I went to school.

OTOH, Ray Bradbury's The pedestrian was included in one of my high school English textbooks (early 1960s). I had never heard of him at that time; it was one of the best introductions provided in that course.
