The tail of that Wikipedia article mentions that birch beer and vanilla ice cream is a Birch Beer Float .... while birch beer and chocolate ice cream is called a "Black Cow". So it's made often enough to have a separate name!

(Though I kinda thought a Black Cow referred to chocolate ice cream and root beer, too. Wikipedia for "Black Cow" says this is true.)

The term has been used for both a rootbeer float and a coke float.

I haven't read the Wiki article yet, but a Black Cow is yuck! Chocolate ice cream and soda? How horrid! Vanilla is the only ice cream one should use in a float with soda.
