You have to install a reader app, like AlReader or Moon. And no, the page turn buttons will not work. You'll have to tap or swipe the display.

It may be possible to get the page turn buttons to work here by using something like Tasker, but that's a project for another day.

Manual

Has anyone been able to find the manual online. So far it is not with the others at the B&N site.

Then the NOOK Glowlight Plus (3)
And now the NOOK Glowlight 3 (er... 4?).

It's a glimpse into B&N's thinking about this product. It's the "3" because the NOOK Glowlight Plus DOESN'T COUNT. It wasn't a "real" NOOK. It doesn't have the classic shape, form, and texture of the Simple Touch, while the others do.

The others all have the partitioned memory, too. The NST (w/o memory card) had about 250M, the whitey-lighty went about 500M, and now the Trey roughly 1000M. See the pattern? It doubles with each iteration. Ol' B&N probably feels like that's plenty.

Face it; there aren't enough of us hobbyists who care about side-loading to sway the sales numbers either way. The NOOK is an entry level downloading machine, designed to sell B&N digital product. Without doubling the price, we won't get everything.

FOR THE PRICE it's a pretty nice reader. And B&N has to keep the price down to get the walk-in customers to bite. But, let's be fair. Lots of people wanted the page turn buttons, and they came back.
I think it is the Simple Touch with Glowlight that they are not figuring in the counting, since it had Simple Touch in its name, but your reasoning does make sense, since the Glowlight Plus was so 'different' from the others.

For the price, I think it's a terrific value compared to its direct competition. It bugs me the way the Paperwhite is quoted at $120, when to get it without special offers adds another $20 to the price, a whopping increase in percentage terms but the comparable price to other ad-less readers. The screen of the Aura Edition Two is laughable in a current release. And, of course, the new GlowLight has the NightMode light. And buttons.

Unfortunately, I can't cite double the memory as added value, which it would be if B&N didn't have a bull's eye on its foot.

I have to drive by the malls today and I'll swing in to take a look. B&N is next to Best Buy, so I'll see if I can see the new Oasis, but I know they won't have it on display.

I couldn't find it either, but dieterpops posted a link to the support page earlier.

Well, my first day pre-order still hasn't shipped. It's processing and can't be canceled. Estimated delivery now showing Nov. 13 (B&N member free "express" shipping). Oh, B&N, why must you remind me that it was a good idea to move on to your competitors?

Yeah, I'd say, in spirit, it's more like:

Simple Touch
Simple Touch with Glowlight
Glowlight (1)
Glowlight Plus (2)
Simple Touch with Glowlight 2!

But that wouldn't work...so it's Glowlight 3.

I got play with the Nook some last night, and the most startling change for both is the page turn speed. With the Oasis, the page turns so fast it's unnoticeable. Most of the time it's instant, no flash, nothing. The Nook seems to have slowed down on page turns. I had thought it was a factor of everything downloading and maybe indexing in the background, but it's been about 12 hours now, and the page turns are still kind of slow. Indeed all response time is a tad slow. It is going through battery pretty fast, so it could still be background processing. I've pulled down roughly 200 books.

Nook wins on the lighting. Kindle has retained the always on model, while Nook allows you to hold down the Nook button for two seconds to turn the light on and off. I find Nook's lighting to be a little softer on all settings, so I like that a lot.

Kindle wins on the case. Nook doesn't have one. Those will be out on the 21st. I'm making do with an old elastic Simple Touch case for the moment, and it doesn't fit well.

Overall, obviously Kindle is the better device, and the price point reflects that. It has audio, more memory, better processing power, Audible, a larger screen, and 3G. But the Nook has its charms, and I would consider it a worthy competitor for Kindles in the same price range.

Thanks. I'll come back to this thread when (if) I buy one of these. Basically the only reason I would install Nova Launcher is because I would want to have the option to use more of that "internal" memory, instead of seeing most of it just go to waste.

Yeah, that's what I figured. But you're right, the Plus is the one that really "doesn't fit."

The Simple Touch with Glowlight doesn't count in the numbering. As it was still the Nook Simple Touch. It is like this:

NOOK Glowlight (1)
NOOK Glowlight Plus (2)
NOOK Glowlight 3 (3)

Simple.

I think too much hay is made about the partitioned memory on the Simple Touch. With a micro SD card, who cares about partitioned memory? Honestly, if all the Nooks had micro SD card slots, they could all have 100% partitioned memory and I'd buy regardless.

It was only with the Glowlight where they removed the SD card and only allowed 512MB that they fell down. They learned a lesson with the Plus and now it looks like they promptly forgot it.

I think regardless of the price it is a very nice reader. I just wish B&N weren't so stupid about the partitioned memory.

It is possible to turn the Kindle Oasis 2 frontlight completely off.

Turn off auto brightness, then long tap the dim light icon.

Hey, a few pages back I mentioned that I emailed Len Riggio about the storage capacity on the new Glowlight.

While I was at lunch, I got a call from a Stephanie at Barnes and Noble and we talked about it. I actually told her that she should come here and read this thread. Whatever else, I appreciate that B&N did have someone reach out and talk to me.

She also mentioned maybe getting me a deal on the Glowlight Plus, but I didn't go into detail on that one. I was/am hoping that someone at B&N would listen and at least allow the same 2.5GB for sideloading that the Plus had.

Great! I had emailed B&N about the storage as well. I also suggested that they should deliberately work the Android end of the G-3 a little more, and make it easy for folks to sideload apps. That's an ability that the competition (in the US, anyway) doesn't have. I wonder how many people would care about apps on an e-reader. I'm thinking of apps like Instapaper or Pocket. No serious games or videos. We'd need better hardware for anything more demanding.
