It'll be worth it:-) When I tested on my tablet I was able to unzip it. I'll check.

arjaybe,
Thanks for posting free audio versions of your books – much appreciated! It's the first time I've had experience with this format, and thought it might be helpful to others who have similarly lacked familiarity with the format if I shared how I accessed the files. I downloaded the zipfile for “Green Comet,” which upon clicking on it expanded into separate ogg files (one for each chapter), a format I'm not familiar with, and which is unrecognized by Windows Media Player on my laptop. Windows then asked me if I would like to go the Microsoft Store to obtain an app that would play the ogg files. I demurred, deciding instead to see what's available online, and ultimately decided on “Freemake Audio Converter,” which is free, simple and worked fine on the sample files I tested, converting them to the wmv format playable on Windows Media Player without incident. I'm in the process of converting the remaining files and will post additional feedback after more extensive listening. Once again, thanks! |

Thank you, Alyssa, for taking the time to drop a comment, and for the effort you went to, and for explaining it here for others. I admit I'm a little surprised that Windows can't read an open format. At least it recognized its shortcomings and offered you a way to overcome them, even if you chose the more independent route.
Thanks again Jim |

Jim,
Here is an update on my previous post re: converting the ogg files to the wmv format readable by Windows Media Player. I began converting more of the Green Comet files using Freemake Audio Converter only to discover that the free version of this software is limited to files less than 3 minutes long. Greater than that and you have to either purchase a one-year subscription for $19.95 or the software outright for $39.95. While I found your narration to be fine I would suggest switching to the much more common mp3 format (which is readable by Windows Media Player) to avoid the hassle I encountered in simply accessing the files. Your best bet would be to find a way to enable your computer to handle OGG. It should be quite simple and should certainly not be predatory like that freeware you're using for conversion. Your second best bet would be to find an open source, non-freeware conversion program. I'm not familiar with Windows software, but surely there must be something. (Here's an example that I found by googling "open source audio conversion for Windows" - https://www.freac.org/ - I haven't used it, of course.) If neither of those is acceptable or possible for you, then I will convert the books myself (using one of several free and open programs available for Linux) and provide you with a link to Dropbox. Until MP3 is shown to be completely free and open, I won't be using it. I will do this for you, though. If it is what you want, go to my website and use the contact form. rjb |

Try Audacity for format conversion. Free, open-source, wonderful audio editor. It supports quite a few file types, and with installation of some additional codecs, even more. Very good on-line help documentation. Windows, Mac, Linux
http://www.audacityteam.org/download/ PortableApps makes a dandy portable version for Windows, run it from a thumb-drive! https://portableapps.com/apps/music_...acity_portable |

Granny,
A quick thank you for recommending Audacity, which played the ogg file with a simple click of the play button! Alyssa |

More on Media Players
Granny alerted me to Audacity (highly recommended) as an alternative to Windows Media Player, and I've since found another - VLC, also free.
