B&N to release NOOK GlowLight 3

I'm in a particular bind. I only bought my Glowlight Plus 13 days ago. Right before they announced the new device. So I technically have until tomorrow to return it. But I don't want to return it if my sideloading space is cut down by 2/3.

I know, First World problems.

If your B&N has both, you could return the Plus for the 3, take the 3 home and see how much space you have. Then, you could always take the 3 back and get the Plus if that's the better of the two for you.

Assuming both have exactly the same amount of room for sideloading, the three is better than the Plus in almost every way, except for waterproofing. But that is something to consider. My aunt lost a Kindle to the bath a few years ago.

Went to my local B&N today. They had signage, and the new Nook front and center at the Nook desk. I like it. It is really wonderful to hold. There actually is a cool to warm slider in the quick settings for the night mode if you have it set to manual instead of auto. Just for kicks I asked if I could buy one today. The employee didn't know they had a new Nook! Oh, B&N, really? The other employee there said I would have to come back Wednesday as expected.

ETA: Ok, the photo is vertical on my phone and computer. Is there a trick to keep MobileRead from turning it sideways?

Do nook readers have something similar to send-2-kindle?(send your articles to the reader over WiFi) Maybe I could install the pocket apk.

The slider is good news! The full-on "warm" setting looks a bit too orange for my taste. I'm hoping about 3/4 warm will yield a mellow parchment look.

Okay. I missed that. But it says "Manage Storage." I'm curious if that means this ratio can be changed. If our local Barnes & Noble has a Glowlight 3 I'll check one out tonight.

I did get to try out the GlowLight 3. Unfortunately "managing" the storage only means deleting files (or, I'm guessing, moving books to the Cloud on the B&N partition). So memory for side-loading definitely appears to be limited to less than a GB. I don't get it, why do you need 5.5 GBs of storage for B&N content when *that* can be moved to the online storage? (Not that this effects me as I don't carry that many books on my eReader, but I'm sure it will be a big disappointment for many). The other thing that threw me a bit was that the screen seemed more deeply inset than necessary for a capacitance screen. Not far from being as deep as my infrared devices. So much for the bad now on to the good.

The screen was nice and evenly lit. The "temperature" adjustment goes from bright blue/white to almost orange, so everyone should be able to find their comfortable setting. (The pictures make it look a little more orange than it actually is, at least in the light of the store.) I found 2/3 to 3/4 towards the warm side was about perfect (at least in the store's lighting). The fonts (on the "darker" setting) are well formed and easy to read. Publisher's fonts' weight can not be adjusted (kind of like the Kindle). Fonts start out with the Regular setting and can be darker or lighter. I'm pretty sure mine would always be on the darker side. For those who haven't used a Nook since the Simple Touch (like me), the interface is a bit more like the Kindle. Font sizes are set with a plus and minus font size, so I don't know how many increments there are. Seems to be quite a few. You get back to settings, light brightness, font settings, etc., via a tap on the top of the screen. (I kind of like the way the Simple Touch worked better here.) There doesn't seem to be a way to turn the Title off on the top of the page, or change the bottom to anything but "page # of total page #." Kindle definitely wins out here. The smallest margin takes you close to the edge of the screen (closer than with the Kindle) so I liked that. I like the feel and size of the GlowLight 3. I'm pretty sure I would get a case for carrying this device, not for reading with it. The keys are easier to push than on the Simple Touch, but they're a bit "clicky," and don't feel as solid as the original ST. I did notice a slight page turn lag, not bad but definitely not as quick as my Kindle Basic. Definitely not a deal breaker, though. If you're *not* a fan of the grayed out chapter titles and dictionary definitions, you're not going to like the way the GlowLight 3 handles those – definitely grayed out. I don't quite get that. It looks like the Nook has some kind of GoodReads type app – but since I never use GoodReads I really didn't look into that. The Nook interface still has a button to take you directly back to your book, which I like (when pushing the Nook "N"). You get to the Settings via the GlowLight icon. Click on that you get to light settings and then you get an "All Settings" button. Kind of seems a little backwards. In the storage settings you can check or uncheck, magazines and newspapers being automatically downloaded (which is probably why they partition the Nook the way they do, they're definitely trying to push magazines and newspapers). They also have a check for automatically storing content online. (Not exactly sure how that works, or what the point is.)

Sorry to ramble. Nothing I saw tonight will keep me from buying the GlowLight 3 – and there was nothing that made me say "I must have it." I do like the screen and its choice of temperatures quite a bit. Fonts are good and clear. But I still like my NST and NST with Glowlight (both of which still work fine) so a new Nook is not really a necessity. At any rate, for what it's worth, those are some of my impressions.

Thanks for the ramble. It was informative. Boy I hope what we're seeing as far as storage goes is an error. Everything else about the new Nook sounds so nice.

Nook software has never been the best, but one thing I always liked was the little button in the upper left corner that would take you back to your current book if you were in any other screen. It was there on the ST, Glowlight and Glowlight Plus. It was a reminder that the primary purpose of the thing is to read a book and getting back to that was always one tap away.

On the Glowlight 3 that seems to be replaced with some sort of account icon with a cartoon head and a name.

No, they never have before. However, their system was designed for side loading - your books go right into your files and show up where books should show up (most of the time). My ST has an SD card, but my Glo does not.

BTW, one of the things I like about the B&N Cloud is your ability to archive stuff so your 900 book cloud library isn't full of stuff that you've already read and don't want to keep scrolling through. You can always unarchive it. Obviously, not a feature that everybody wants (some want access to all their books all the time).

Yes that is an profile button. It's just like on Android. Now there is an icon on the bottom that takes you back to your current book. And that replaced the settings icon, which you now have to access by clicking on the top right.

If you got the Glowlight Plus software update this week, you can see it there.
It looks identical.

I don't have a Glowlight Plus

When I broke my Nook STwG, there was only the Glowlight, which I avoided. And finding a replacement Nook STwG on eBay was prohibitively expensive, so I moved on to a Kobo Aura.

I am tempted later this year to pick up a Glowlight 3 and a Glowlight Plus (they seem to be going on eBay for $60). One for my better half, one for me.

Rcentros, thanks for your ramble and it inspired me to take a look at the Nook 3 today. That memory thing - 8 Gbs, but 6.5 Gbs for downloads and sideloads. The staff agree that it looks kindof weird but there is no separation - the full 6.5 Gbs can be used for sideloading. This Nook uses the same surfacing as the ST which makes it a pleasure to hold. If you MUST have an reader in a cover, then that isn't a feature you will care about (I keep my ereaders in protective sleeves when not in use because covers add too much weight IMHO).

Another feature is the option to be able to archive from your reader. This removes the book from your general library but does not delete it. You can always get it back but you don't have to scroll through pages of books you've already read looking for your next new read. Even archived, I still have 78 pages of books to browse through - it's 105 if I had to include books I've already read. This is a great feature for someone who doesn't usually reread or saves the rereads for when the next book in the series comes out.

The page turn buttons had an unnecessarily loud click, I thought. If you are an occasional button user, this won't bother you. If you are a regular button user, it might become annoying over time. The Kindle 5 has similar loud click buttons. As comparison, the Kindle Keyboard and the Nook ST buttons are virtually silent.

Finally, the lighting. I have damaged eyes. One of the reasons I preferred the Glo over the Paperwhite in the past was because the lighting was easier on my eyes. The lighting for the Voyage is similar to that of the Glo. I am currently testing the refurbished Kindle Paperwhite 3, I bought for my Mom and I can barely finish each short story before I have to take a break (Year's Best SF ed. by David Hartwell). I just don't know why they differ so much as I can read for hours on the Voyage or the Glo. The new Glo continues to have that better (for me) lighting, so I'm quite happy about that.

I don't currently need a new ereader, but if either of my Nooks fail, then I will be happy to buy the new Glo.

Thanks for the information. If that's true my "maybe" buy a GlowLight 3 will be upgraded to "probably" buy one. But I don't understand why the Manage Storage setting shows two partitions if this is the case. Hopefully soon someone will get one and will be able to give a report on this.

As for the lighting ... i don't know why my NST w/Glowlight doesn't bother my eyes, but my (now gone) Kobo Glo did or why Kindle PaperWhites (in limited testing) seem uncomfortable (like the Kobo Glo).

When you say you're testing a Kindle 3, does that mean a Paperwhite, 3rd Generation?

As for the "clicky" keys, I agree that these could get annoying. Kind of wish Barnes & Noble would have used better switches (or at least quieter ones) in this device. (I do like using the keys.)

Yes, Paperwhite Generation 3 - sorry I wasn't clear on that. It was a refurbished for $50. The Voyage has taught me to use the keys less often, so the clicky keys are not a game changer. Touch screens sometimes just don't respond well to my fingers - not sure why. It's very annoying.
