There's more people. Those with sensitive files who can't risk security issues and did not buy Onyx products.

After jlark's post there's not much more to say.

@Booxtor: As he said already, it's just shortsightedness to think the effort would be greater than the benefit - for all parties involved. Plus even assuming they're not really interested in their Eurpean market, there are still some rules of the game...

The last time I tried contacting them, Onyx didn't respond at all. If you are in contact with them, maybe you could communicate there's enough interest in the issue. They won't have to release the code all at once. We can wait, but there has to be a sign of willingness from Onyx' side.

Maybe it would be best to (again) give them some time. Meanwhile, we could finish gathering information for reporting them. If they don't respond or they refuse, we can go on. First, there's gpl-violations.org. After all, enforcement's up to the copyright holders, so we should contact them, too. For example, FSF and the Software Freedom Conservancy would be the place to go for many of the projects.

At the very least, we just have to do something.

Sorry, I jump in the debate without having read the post properly, which ATM is just queued, but:

is it possible that the issue is that code will/would be released if/iff/when/only when the competition will do the same?

The competition already does: github.com/reMarkableAS

Boox could only gain from following this example and leaving the work to interested third parties.

Source code availability is absolutely priceless!

I was actually thinking of similar systems (reMarkable is not even Android), just for example it could be Boyue.

EDIT: assuming this is the case, anybody who wanted access to that code, should probably introduce themselves as developers, explain where they would want to contribute, and actually contribute.

Sounds rather backwards to me as source code should be available without any prior conditions. So the very first step has to be taken on behalf of Onyx, not the other way round. Source code availability will also be a major sales argument for interested buyers.

Why even bother buying a device if source code availability is not already granted in advance? What attraction does a device have if there is no guarantee for it's prospective owner to enhance and adapt it's software according to his own needs, especially if the default software it is delivered with is still far from fulfilling it's expected potential?

Interested developers would hardly invest hundreds of dollars/euros/pounds into a device when it is already know in advance that it is closed hardware without access to the code. That would be tossing hard earned money into the wrong direction.

While being a Linux user since 1995, i am not a developer, but i still decide my hardware purchases based on compatibility with my chosen OS. Pure hardware capabilities are not enough, the ultimate deciding factor is source code availability.

My next e-ink reader purchase will be a 10.3" device and the decision is between the already available reMarkable and the upcoming Onyx Note. The deciding purchase factor will be source code availability, even if this would involve a higher price tag.

Providing source code will create a win/win situation for both seller and buyer, hands down.

Yes in general, but in specific I suspect there is a very practical case.
I am much more than positive that you would get the code if - what I said.

Well then, good news for you: it is available.

Dear mdp, your input in this forum is in general valuable but this time you have made faux pas. This thread is here because despite many attempts no one got the open source code from Onyx. We are not even talking here about the full firmware source code, just the open source part (kernel) which will let us quickly build a custom firmware to our pleasure. Whilst it is possible to hack the device, reverse engineer it, spending countless hours why do so when first of all the corporation should obey Open Source Software license.

My dear friend (very sincerely), I am afraid you misunderstood my implicit message and did not get what I meant "between the lines". In fact, your statement «no one got the open source code from Onyx» is false. Some of us have access to the code.

@mdp, what is available, where? "some of us have access" does not "it is available" equate.

@mdp: I just saw your comment and was like "wow, he did it!" - did you really get the complete code? If so, how did you manage?

I have to admit I completely lost track of this project after real life got in my way; now I came back here by chance - and obviously there's been some progress anyways!

I know. Part of your interest should be "it /can in fact/ be made available". And it is so. For what the other part is concerned, sorry, I have too little to say. Really!
