managing "sort by" list

Hi,

I've created some custom columns for my metadata, but I'm only sorting my library by maybe 5 columns. Is there a way to restrict this "sort by" list to just the desired columns I use and to hide the rest just for the search? I have this problem in cover grid-mode and also with the content server

Hope somebody can

I'm not completely sure what you're asking, but it sounds like a job for the View Manager plugin.

Set up two views in the plugin: the Main view with all the columns and the Search view that includes only your columns to search, in your preferred sort order.

To search, switch to the Search view, find the book you're looking for, then switch back to the Main view.

I think that pein2k4 is talking about the "sort" button that's near the search bar when in cover view.

And I don't think there is a way to do what you want for the time being. (I don't know for the content server since I don't use it)

Sort is Sort
The view manager, should affect all views (I don't use this PI, but since the View Manager is an Icon, it should work in Gridview as weell as the book List

Have you actually tested the sort button in the cover grid view?
Because for me it offer more sort options, it even show masked column, so I doubt the View Manager will change anything (but I might be wrong...)

I don't need other sorts.. I (mostly )use it the way Kovid shipped it.
So I ask
Why have you not tried the PI? It takes seconds to install. a few more to configure. And a few more to uninstall if it does not meed your needs.

That is what I did. Most I do keep because I read the notes before downloading to filter out those I had no reason to use. That does not indicate there was a problem, just no interest.

There is no way to limit the entries shown in the sort by list. I dont in general think thats a good idea. If I make that option, people will use it and then forget that they have used it and open bug reports about columns being missing in that list.

The options (list of columns) offered by the Sort By button in Grid view appear to be the same as those offered by the Sort By flyout in the book list context menu, which are the same as those that you get if you add the Sort By tool to a toolbar.

The Sorting feature of the View Manager plugin appears to operate the same in all three presentation styles - Cover Grid, Book List (spreadsheet) and Cover Browser (carousel). To think it might do otherwise is a heresy

The Sort By drop down will show a green tick for the View Manager primary sort key, but it won't indicate secondary, tertiary etc keys.

Well I don't really use cover view and don't really need it either
I had already used this plugin in the past, but I did not remember that it allowed you to set a sort order, I thought it was about masking and ordering your columns. (and I thought you were implying that it was going to change the options displayed in calibre standard sort button)
But thank you BetterRed for the explication!

Hi,
thanks for the quick answers. Well, I thought maybe there's a way to show only columns in the sort button, which are also visible in the Book-List-View. There everyone can decide for themselves which column they want to hide and which they don't. The View Manager has no effect on the the lenght of the list in the sort button on Cover grid view -.-

I'm more of a visual type and I really really like calibres Cover grid view. Normally I only use standards like author, title, series, modified or date. But from time to time I also have my own as #read, #notRead, #writtenReviews, #onDevice, #bookStatus, #readingProgress. I never sort for example by publisher or price, pages, bookTyp (eBook, eMagazine, Paperbook). It's nice to know those things and have them written into each meta, but I don't really need them to manage my books...

It's just that mine is a pretty long list, but if changes pose more problems than use, I can live with this long list
