Got my new Oasis today, first impressions

I notice mine has done that a couple of times, too. But it always responds the second time you press the button. My original Oasis would do this occasionally too, but with that device, you can press the page button forever, apparently, without getting the page to turn. But if you touched the screen to turn the page, the button worked fine thereafter.

I'm more concerned about the battery, but that may be reacting as it does because I'm busy loading books. I've decided to just read with it a few days and see how it does.

So what I've discovered since yesterday is that holding it in one hand when I'm sitting or even lying on my side is comfortable because of the way the back works. thanks for sharing this feedback. i've been very interested in getting the new Oasis, but this may be a show stopper for me. i too read on my back and i read one handed on my back with my Paperwhite and i hold it using an "L" configuration between my thumb and pointer finger. i had hoped that gripping the thicker portion of the new Oasis would be more comfortable than my current reading habits.

i had long wanted to buy the original Oasis but shied away from it given all the complaints about the uneven lighting. if i could find one of those with an even lit screen that would probably suit my needs better. (i don't need the waterproofing or audible functionality, but am primarily motivated by the larger screen and what i thought was potentially a more comfortable one handed use while reading in bed, lying on my back)

Has anyone else had issues of the Oasis being totally unresponsive? Mine has frozen about half a dozen times in the last 15 minutes and i keeping having to do a restart, its also flashed a few times for no reason.

Was it you asking me about this earlier in the thread? I was able to read in this config just fine. It used to tire my little finger after a while holding the weight of the voyage, but the difference in weight spread on the Oasis make it feel easier. It's an adjustment, but I think you'll be fine.

Is it indexing books, Josie? I've had other Kindles be unresponsive while indexing, so now I always leave it alone, plugged in to the wall charger, until indexing is complete.

You can't, which is why it's a good idea to load books in reasonably small batches. Otherwise, you'll have to delete the entire batch. I do mine one letter of the alphabet (in terms of author's last name) at a time.

Stopped by the Amazon Books that opened up some months ago in San Jose to have a little hands on with the new Oasis. Hadn’t been there before even though it is just off my normal commute route.

I was disappointed: there was some pre-release software on there, no opportunity to preview Invert B & W or Audible feature. For some reason a number of the books on the device lacked thumbnail images. Maybe it was the store lighting, but I didn’t like the ‘dirty bronze’ color of the aluminum against the black front plate (why not a more neutral silver/grey/black?). I was expecting some sort of ergonomic epiphany holding it, but it felt a little awkward in my hands, and finding a resting spot for my thumb where I could press forward or back seemed tricky.

I had been leaning to getting one, now I’m not sure what it will take to change my somewhat negative impression.

I only had a problem when the Oasis updated itself after it arrived. It froze on the kindle screen of the person sitting under the tree. I had to hold the power button for about 15 seconds to reboot and then it finished the update and has worked okay since then.

I also notice its slow to wake up. When I press the power button it even gives me a "waking up" message along the bottom but still takes longer to wake up then the Voyage did.

Mine is going back before the 30 days is up. There are things I like about the Oasis but I've never been able to handle a Kindle without a case. As they've gotten lighter and thinner it's gotten worse for me. I ordered a case when I ordered the Oasis and the case is unavailable. I'm in Mexico and the order went from arriving Nov. 6th, to arriving between December 6th and 20th but we'll let you know.

So, I'll play with it a little and then back it does. If I kept it and the case was as bad as the Voyage case I'd be stuck again.

What I like, the screen is better than my Paperwhite. I like have an estimated percentage on the battery. And, I really like being able to enlarge the system font.

If I had the case I might keep the Oasis. I don't so I won't.

ps. can you describe how you are holding it? are you just gripping it by wrapping your four fingers on the backside and then having your thumb on the front?

Can you give us screenshots with brightness turned to max, and with inverted black and white colouring too please?

I find the uneven screen of the Voyage to be a nagging issue and I know Oasis has the same problem but from left to right, so Im curious as to how the new Oasis looks in that regard

I noticed the "waking up" message as well. It must eventually go into a deeper sleep. It doesn't happen if you wake it up soon after it has gone to sleep.
