I think that unfortunately there’s a spectrum of sensitivity to unevenness in illumination or colour of which I represent one extreme (I’ve never used an eInk screen I wasn’t happy with) and William the other. It’s not differences between devices that’s the issue, but differences between observers.

First impressions:
Small and light. I know the Oasis 1 is smaller but for me this feels as manageable as a 6" reader but with a bigger screen. Buttons. This is my first Kindle with page buttons since my K3 which now belongs to my dad. I never much cared back then but these I quite like, mostly because of the one-handed aspect, though as I said elsewhere it's more comfortable for me to reach one of them than the other. Also, I've found I get used to being able to go back and forward and then I sort of feel ever so slightly irritated that I can't somehow use them to navigate the menus etc. (It's not a real desire to do so, it's just a feeling, it's like how when I'm using a PC I'd really rather be using the mouse mainly, or the keyboard and not switching between them a lot). Responsive. This is easily the most responsive ereader I have. It reacts to touches straight away. Normally I don't notice this - after all turning a page doesn't need to be particularly speedy - but when you're navigating through menus you feel the benefit. Brighter. Just checked it against my PW1 and PW3 and it's the brightest of the bunch. And very even. If I turn it up to max I can see some slight shadows along the edge but I don't notice colouring. Actually brightness isn't necessarily a benefit. I've found with nearly all my lighted readers that I suffer from eyes where I either feel the light is too bright or, if I reduce the level to what feels bearable, the contrast suffers. The answer for this for me is... Night mode! So happy to have this. My other kindles are jailbroke purely to be able to install Koreader, which I use purely to have the ability to switch to night mode. (Koreader is a fine program but night mode is the "killer feature" for me). My Kobo Aura One will do night mode with a config file hack but with the Oasis I can do it with a menu setting. Audible. I've tried it out and it works fine. I have a number of Audible books and quite a few where I also have the ebook. Not all of which have Whispersync linking them however. For those that do you can switch between reading and listening really easily which I like, though I kind of would like to be able to do both. Also can we have the old mp3 player back? Overall very happy. The proof will be in whether I reach for it rather than my other options. Time will tell. |

Hmm. Might have another battery problem here. Charged my new Oasis all the way and left it for three hours in Airplane mode. Just turned it on and the battery is at 78%. No books are indexing.

In a dark room with the front light dimmed for comfort, my KV has substantial gradients because of distance and substantial coning because of the finite number of LEDs. Under the same conditions, I see no non-uniformity at all on the KOA2, so I've been culled. |

I'm not WilliamG, but I had Bell's Palsy and the right eye doesn't open all the way and sometimes doesn't focus quite right (especially after a while at the computer). But I've also never been able to see pictures in those posters of squiggly lines (even before the Bell's Palsy). People always tell that "it's this or that," and I respond with "yeah, right." I know they're seeing a picture/painting, but I never have.

Thanks to everyone on their honest opinions on the new Oasis and for all the info on comparisons. I want to look at one in bestbuy, before I have this put under the Christmas tree. I need to make sure the screen is right for me 1st. Of course, with the price, it will be the only item on my Christmas list.
There is no hurry for me, as I currently use a flawless Voyage, but I hope that the new Oasis screen does not disappoint. I never did spring for the last Oasis, after I saw all the screen issues, but this one has many of the features I have been really looking for—such as reading while I shower : ) No, but really, one does not necessarily have to read by a pool. Just knowing that I could be caught in the rain reading and be fine is good enough for me. The new Oasis will give me the extra peace of mind when it come to taking it around to read. Just hoping that the screen does not look like some of the paperwhites, which some people have nicknamed the "paperbeige." Out of curiousness, will many of you keep your PW or Voyages once you have the new Oasis? Last edited by ArthurianLegends; 11-01-2017 at 09:17 PM. |

It really depends on how they'll compare (haven't received mine yet, probably sometime next week), but I think I'll keep both my Voyage and the old Oasis. I like them, the text on my Voyage is really black and crisp, and the little Oasis is so light and comfortable to hold. I've been switching between the two, so unless the new Oasis is vastly better than either of them, I probably will be switching between three Kindles in the future. Besides, it's always good to have back-up readers.
