The only issue I could see is getting the correct update properly downloaded and copied to your Kindle's root directory (not in any folder). Once it's there, it's just a matter of clicking the "Update Software" selection (with the Kindle unplugged from the computer and with a full battery) and waiting for it to do its magic. I've never had a side-loaded update fail.

I'm thrilled with this update (finally! A bold selector). Less thrilled that I have to change my side-loaded mobis to azw or kf8. Especially as I just changed some of them to mobi yesterday in order to see the covers! Ho hum, back to Calibre again. It will be great to be able to change the boldness on all my books though. I wonder what took them so long?

If your experience echoes mine, converting from mobi to AZW3 won't produce a boldness slider. In order to get that I had to convert from mobi to epub. Then go to the Edit Metadata window and delete all the versions of the book except epub. Then convert from epub to AZW3. I've done this on 40 or 50 books and it's worked on all of them. No idea what it will do to your covers, though.

I posted this option a few days ago hoping that some of the techies around would explain to us why you can't just convert from mobi to epub and then select epub as your input with AZW3 as your ouput. But doing that doesn't produce the boldness slider which I don't understand.

Nobody seems interested in the problem so far.

Jim: Your Calibre is probably configured to prefer mobi over azw3 when sending to kindle. As a result, even though you convert your mobi to AZW3, it's still the mobi file that gets uploaded to your kindle.

With the Kindle plugged connected, in Calibre, click on the Device Down arrow, select "Configure This Device". Find and hightlight AZW3 in the list of available formats, click on the green up arrow to movie it to the top of the list.

I'm going to try doing this tomorrow, and hopefully I'll be able to get the covers by sending an extra jpeg to my kindle. I think I still have the ePubs for all my side-loaded books, so I'll do them in batches. I'll let you know whether I get the bold adjustment this way.

Wont work as the Update Software is Grey out.

Then you've either downloaded the wrong file, or put it in the wrong place. Do it right, and it assuredly will work.

I figured I was getting a mobi file, but didn't know what to do about it. Thanks for the heads-up. With AZW3 at the head of the list, converting from mobi to AZW3 does produce the boldness slider. Nice not to have to go through all that rigamarole.

Once you copy the update file to your Kindle device the "Update your Kindle" option is no longer greyed out.

Barbara, I am older than most trees and no geek. My biggest problem is finding the correct file. Amazon Kindle doesn't make it easy especially for the three issues of Paperwhites.

Once I have the correct file I copy it to the desktop on my computer. Then, I plug in my Kindle with it's USB cable. Not all cables handle data but the one that came with your Kindle does. Then you get the beep-beep business and a window opens showing you have a new drive. You drag the file to the drive and just drop it in an open space. Do not, never, never, never, put it in one of the existing files. Then you unplug the cable, make sure you have a good charge on your Kindle, and click on "Update your Kindle". I won't be greyed out.

See rashkae's comments above. If your device is configured properly, converting from mobi to AZW3 will produce the boldness slider. No reason to go through the procedure I'd told you about.

If you let us know the first six characters of the kindle’s serial number then we can give you the link for the proper file to use for that model.

The serial number is listed in the device settings and in your Amazon account info.
