Light off on awakening PW3

I have a PW-3 with a cover
Occasionally (about 10% of the time) when I open it, the screen goes live with the correct page and it responds to touch as normal. But the light is completely off, and stays off.

If I close and reopen, it comes back on (so far).

Is this cause for alarm?

Reboot it. Press and hold the power button for a full 30 seconds, ignoring any screen prompts. Set it down and wait while it reboots.

Reboots can fix abnormal behavior.

I've been having the same problem with my 6th gen Paperwhite for a while. If I open the text options box and change the light setting, the light will come on.

My husband’s 2nd gen Paperwhite does it sometimes, mine did too. I never gave it much thought, just figured it was a glitch.

I’ve never had a device that didn’t glitch at times.

That happened to me quite frequently on my PW2 and now happens occasionally on my Voyage. No cause for alarm...I've gotten a lot of use out of both devices. As you said closing and opening the cover reactivates the light--and I found that going into settings and changing the light level will turn it on as well.

So reboot it.

Yes, it is an indication of a hardware problem that can grow worse.
But the start-up boot code includes tests and corrections for the problem.

Be sure you have a full charge on the battery and then, as mentioned above, reboot it.

But I did not ask how to fix it (which I have done anyway, by open/close; changing brightness, or indeed rebooting) I asked what it meant. If it was a symptom of a serious problem.

Naively I thought Kindle OS was more stable than PCs and glitches indicated a hardware issue rather than in the Windows world where the OS is so flaky that it just gets unstable for no external reason and "reboot" is the answer to 90% of problems.

Hi. No one was implying that you don't know how to reboot.

If you get a helpful yet useless to you answer, do not take it personally. 90% of the time, the OP doesn't realize most problems can be solved by either a reboot or a charge so you got the standard answer which may help someone else.

Now is it a common problem, I don't know about your particular device, but lights and beeps failing are fairly common across everything. So are glitches.
