Egads, another version that is cratering.

Guess I'll avoid the last two versions and hope for the next one.

Hardly, I'm not sure what "cratering" means but it sounds like you're implying something bad.

It does show that we're all different. Just a personal opinion, for me the behaviours described in anacreon's post #134 are welcome new features not bugs.

Too many times when paging quickly through the MyBooks list I press too hard in the wrong place and end up opening a book by accident. Once open it displays as 1% read. A pop-up which lets me re-mark them all as 'unread' again, with minimal effort, is a Good Thing. I don't consider a book I've only opened and not read past the frontmatter as "in progress".

The same would be true for a book where I'd read to the end of the last chapter but closed it without paging through the last few pages of backmatter. That would probably be displayed as at least 95% read. I've read as much as I'm ever going to read and to all intents and purposes I should have marked it as "Finished", or more likely, in my case, deleted it completely. Personally I have zero interest in reading statistics.

Ignore anacreon. It's not a big deal at all. anacreon is making much more of a deal then needs to be made. I had the same pop-up and it didn't bother me one bit. In fact, it let memark the books I had at 1% to be set to unread. That was a good thing.

4.6.9995 IS NOT CRATERING AT ALL! That is 100% BS.

I wasn't protesting the first pop-ups. I was protesting that after unchecking some books I had to do it a second time, and I was afraid that I would have to do it every time I moved from the collections list to the books lists.

I have some books at 95% or 1% that I want to keep that way, even after one month. 1% of a 10000+ pages (my maximum is 15640) is 100+ pages, the last 5% of a 800 pages book is 40 pages.

I have many "Complete Works" in which I dip now and then for instance, especially poetry - I don't want to lose my pages.

But when I just took my reader, it didn't ask me again. I'll see how it goes after reading for a while which I didn't get to do after upgrading this morning.

If this version isn't proving to have serious problems, then why has Kobo reportedly pulled the update from further installs?

1% is anyplace in the book before you hit 2%. So just opening a book is going to be at 1%.

I don't know how often the pop-up will appear, but I doubt it would be annoying or why bother to have it?

Kobo pulled 4.6.9990 due to issues with slow speed. 4.6.9995 has not been pulled and works quite well.

What a strange comment. Because the feature doesn't bother you, it shouldn't bother anyone else.

We've all got different preferences. Although I was initially bothered by the new homescreen, I made my peace with it. Doesn't bother me at all anymore now that I've figured out how to keep unsolicited recommendations from appearing on it. However, it seems to bother a significant number of other people for a variety of reasons.

I can quite understand how such a pop up feature might be annoying to some people if it constantly popped up and demanded attention. I can also see how the feature might be appealing to others.

Wouldn't it be great if there were a box one could check that said something to the effect of, "Do not show this message again"?

Enough other apps seems to employ just such an option that methinks it wouldn't be too challenging to implement. And then everyone could be satisfied with the same software rather than assuming a one size fits all approach.

The thing is, the way it was said, it was aaid like it's a glitch in the new firmware and it could put off some from installing the new firmware. So I'm saying it in a way that will reverse what was said so other can give the new firmware a try,

I completely forgot about this new feature when I wrote up the changes from 4.6.9960. I saw it a couple of times during the beta testing, but not enough to truly work out the pattern for how it works. But...

It should display periodically. Once for the "barely started" and once for the "neary finished". It probably displays the books that have been in those states for the longest. Which would mean that if you dismiss it without changing any books, these books are the most likely to appear the next time the popup is shown.

For control, the following two lines have been added to the config file in the "ApplicationPreferences" settings section:

Code:
MarkAsFinishedLastShown=@Variant(\0\0\0\x10\0%\x81\x96\x2\xbb\xdc.\xff)
MarkAsUnreadLastShown=@Variant(\0\0\0\x10\0%\x81\x96\x2\xbe\x1e\x61\xff)
I'm pretty sure they are dates stored in some Qt internal format. If I delete these lines, the next time I go to the book list, the popups are displayed. It looks like they do the "almost finished" first.

I don't know how often this is supposed to show. If someone translates the above dates, then that is the last time I saw it on my Aura ONE. That is at least three weeks ago. Like anacreon, I think they were displayed a couple of times early one. That might be related to the action and if there are more books that fit the category. By that, I mean if you change the status of the books displayed, and there are more books that fit the selection criteria, then it might not set the timestamp above so that you are prompted with the next batch the next time. If that is happening, then only changing some of them would mean they either need to track what has been shown and ignored, or display the same ones again. I don't know if this is the case, or if there was simply a bug in setting the timestamp the first time.

Were do you get that idea? Or are you again showing your complete misunderstanding of how Kobo rolls out updates?

And what on earth does "cratering" mean in this context?

But, will it wipe out us dinosaurs still using ereaders rather than phones?

If that's what petercreasey is referring to, he'll have to point it out to me. I haven't seen any evidence of an endemic problem.

Fair enough. It had come across a little differently to me which is why I found it odd and commented.

So far, I'm quite pleased with this new firmware and would encourage others to try it. Hope the honeymoon lasts.

Going back a few years to the text-based Lunar Lander game, when you failed to land safely, it gave the size of the crater created depending on your impact velocity. The players referred to a bad landing as cratering and, yes, some did strive for bigger craters. I will admit to having a tendency towards hot landings -- those gentle low-gee approaches too often left you high above the surface and out of fuel.

So swap crash landing for cratering...
