I freely admit, I don't have a lot of tolerance for so-called experimental fiction. IME, it almost inevitably means crappy writing. Primarily because the people who are (allegedly) experimenting don't know and deploy the rules well enough in the first place to understand why they're breaking the ones that they are breaking.

I recently said at my own office that the next email I see that says "experimental" is going to be a flat NO. Not that we read that stuff, obviously, but still. Just on principle. I suspect we've never seen the next Joyce toddle through here.

I imagine you have had no end of authors who think they've come up with something completely new or experimental that has never been done before and which instead turns out to be pretty old hat.

No. I don't think I even HAVE a username over there. I never have much to add, but I love reading the stuff there. (I figured you meant that for those that have never Kitchned.)

THAT wouldn't be so bad. It's the stuff that's done from ignorance, and is then cast as "experimental" that drives me bats**t. Like, no attribution for dialogue. No dialogue tags, no quote marks. No beats. Dialogue paragraphs being indented, while narrative aren't. I mean, it goes on and on and on.

Of course, it's right up there with all the Forwards that we correct. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Talk about something that gets up my nose!

I wrote my friend and told him that his titles and tables of contents aren't copyrightable. I explained that anyone could take them and write a series of books using them, and he'd have no recourse. Of course, I also told him that he could still use them. We'll see what he thinks of that in a few months. We have a slow exchange of actual letters because he is suspicious of the electronic simulacrum.

You know, not to be overly critical, but perhaps your friend needs a different type of help than you're able to provide. Ya know?
