Onyx Announces Three New Readers

Onyx and Good e-Reader have new 9.7, 10.3 and 13.3 readers.

More Info Here

But still no release date or prices

Edit: The "Canvas" looks like the N96CML specs that have been visible on their website most of the summer. The other two are running Android 6 and don't have a frontlight

FInally the day wil soon arrive.... A f*****g eReader with android 6, quad-core and 2Gb of ram, and even with HDMI. Or what is almost the same... a tablet with eInk. Now there is only one goal to achieve: an OS that really works. This hardly will happen through the Onyx people, but maybe some programmers want to try to adapt one linux distribution to run in that pretty devices.

I really thought the Onyx Note would have the same specs than the N96ML+. How surprised I am to know I was wrong

You have HDMI, do you really need a distro on top of the original hardware?

(Pause to check a GeekBench 3 comparison of RK3188 and RPi3)

EDIT: done.

A Raspberry PI 3: 490 single, 1200 multi (very rough data)
The OBMC2P as I expect it: 470 single, 1150 multi. (Probably better, thanks to Android 6?)

The Onyx Boox Max Carta 2 Pro will probably be a tiny bit slower than a Raspberry Pi 3. It will be fantastic. But don't have your cat move furniture. I would not use a RPi3 as a production machine. You now have the capability to attach one to the portable device. Android when fitting, monitor when fitting.

If the 10.3 inch model really has a quad core and even an HDMI port as well, that would be great. If it also really has 32gb memory I might consider getting one in spite of the annoying lack of micro sd (again, just like the boyue likebook!)!

Yes, incredibly tempting. Both the 13.3" device and the 10.3" one. I could see myself getting both if they get things right. One for the wife, the other for myself. But I would want to see them delivering on their promises. Quad core. Android 6. Dual touch screen.... Have started putting money into the piggy bank in anticipation.

In thix video Onyx representative says that Canvas will soon be updated will hdmi and quad core processor:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2eKxeR2uHE

So they didn't even release Canva's yet and are already talking about its upgrade in the future..

This is so Onyx-like...

In my opinion they shouldn't release Canva now with this old hardware but use better hardware and release it later. They should get a nice market share with their Note model in 9.7ish devices anyway so Canva with 1GHz processor is redundant.

That being said I love that Onyx is putting or planning to put quad-core processor, hdmi and Android 6 in all their large e-readers and not only Max series.

It definitely gives customers more options and for some of us with limited budget it's great news!

I think tha they observed Dasung and Remarkable for a while now and are going agressively in the market of note-taking and e-ink monitors. It makes me happy, it seems that they are learning on their mistakes (they fixed hardware deficiensies, hopefully software will be polished too)

Or maybe, these new platforms in the context of EPD have now become viable for mass production and before they were a risk...

I'm not hardware expert, possibly. New Sony e-reader was on the market for quite some time using new mult-core processor, and I saw some quad-core processor being used in e-readers in this year.. Inkbook device I think..

So I would say that quad-core architectures are already well-established now in e-reader world. We were (and still are) waited for MAX 2 for at least half a year, based on Booxtor's messages, MAX 2 was delayed for quite some time. Maybe, as you said they waited for better EPD solution, maybe it was something else..

Anyway I saw somewhere Nate's opinion that MAX 2 will be slower than Dasung Pro because Dasung came up with their FLOYD technology.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtYHWEh7ERk&t=1s

Based on this video, when I compare it with how Paperlike Pro displays video (or rather fails to do it), MAX 2 seems much more responsive. And it looks to me that MAX2 is not only faster but provides 16 grayscale quality, whereas Dasung A5 provides worser quality.

It would be nice to see them compared at the same time, but I guess we will have to wait to new year at least.

Excuse my ignorance, but people of Remarkable did an overwhelming work with Linux and very limited hardware, didn't they? So, we guess a Linux not-Android device, without the load of Android, would sports better performance, like that of Remarkable.

Yes and no. It's not a matter of ignorance, it's just that matters are not easy.
When we are mentioning "Linux", are we talking
-- or the kernel?
-- of a specialized environment running over Linux?
-- of Android, as a specialized Operating System running on the Linux kernel?
-- of a Linux Desktop distribution?

A specialized environment running over Linux is not a Linux Desktop distribution.

Native software may (not always) run faster than software built on a framework.
A Linux Desktop will give you full flexibility but not an impression of increased speed.
A RK3188 is not an i7 - the former is 10 times slower, the latter drains your battery 10 times as fast.
As I wrote, the new hardware platform will probably be comparable to a Raspberry Pi 3.
You can run Raspbian on it etc., but if you try it, it will probably not be your choice for a production machine - this out of experience.

I am not really acquainted with what Remarkable did, but I understood they optimized native software.

EDIT: I believe the best of both worlds is to use Android in high portability cases - it was born for that -, and a Linux desktop interfaced to the device, but run by something not irritatingly slow, when a full desktop is required. (Then there's RemixOS...)
